Observations on Heinicke

Mr. Scot

I'm thinking his brief appearance will make people appreciate Cam that much more, for having to play  behind such a shitty OL and still being dominant for as long as he's been here.

I told a friend who asked recently about Heinicke that he looked like he was about 120 lbs. soaking wet.  Welp, he made it to the second qtr before his elbow snapped in half.

I said in the game thread he looked like a high school kid who wandered into an NFL game. The last guy that I remember thinking that about was Jimmy Clausen.

Being realistic, Heinicke wasn't playing himself into an NFL starting job in this game. He had a chance to show that he could be a solid backup. Looks like that chance got aborted.

Lol, that's an accurate description.

But, I think he was even too small to last as a backup.

Not even a full quarter into his first regular season start, and he's already the next Delhomme?

Interesting how quickly things like benefit of the doubt change around here.

Lol right. “Worth noting he’s playing with a backup left tackle” Uhhh you mean like Cam has been since Gross retired?? Mr. Scottie is who he’s always been. But he’s not the only guy on this board that hates a young black man being their QB.

So one (partial) half in...

Said at the very beginning that the Panthers have had a habit this season of having great opening drives, then falling back to Earth. Heinicke followed that pattern exactly, and literally.

The Falcons are defending him exactly as they should, concentrating on stopping everyone else and forcing him to put the game on his shoulders. He's had his moments, but overall has looked about like you'd expect a young backup to look.

I would put one mistake on Rivera. Kyle Allen should have been left in to finish the drive he started. switching quarterbacks in the middle of a drive is a No-No unless you've got an established starter who was out temporarily due to injury. While Heinicke was indeed out due to injury, he's not an established starter. Hence, a drive that ends badly.

Overall so far, outside of a really nice first drive, pretty much what we expected. Like I said, this wasn't going to be the start of an era. This was finding out whether heinecke was worth keeping as a backup for next year. So far, the results are decidedly mixed.

We'll see what happens in the second half.
