You are probably right, but shouldn't a professional athlete expect the best from their club's medical staff?  I would.

Of course. Just like they should expect the best from their other staff as well as themselves. All are responsible parties in the health of these athletes.

That’s great you played in college and have some experience in working out.

I as a medical professional who evaluates and treats athletes after injury, can reassure you that I haven’t had a single injured athlete walk in the door that doesn’t have some degree of impairment indirectly related to said injury.

Coaches and specialist staff are there to prevent injury while people like me are there to come in and correct impairments and poor mechanics that result in these injuries. Maybe there’s more to be said about expectations of these athletes such as with timelines in regards to recovery rates are the issue.

For instance, people on here think a quick google search will tell them everything they need to know about a shoulder injury and timelines for recovery  but have no idea that Luck and Newton’s injury were completely different injuries altogether.

100% Agree. I am not a "Medical Professional" per se. However, being in the medical field, and being a Provider at one point in time... I think people are forgetting that recovery times vary from person to person. Resiliency, Pliability, Physics, Conditioning, Bone Density, Age, etc etc. All can affect how a person heals. Even the same injury, can not heal the same. Ive had tons of rehab from Knee Surgery, Elbow Surgery, and Achilles Tendon Surgery. Again, not an expert, even though I have healed from these surgeries.. it is still not the same pre-injury. I dont really think "Better" Physicians or Specialist have that big of an advantage over player health.

Well put.

Yes, even the same injury isn’t necessarily treated the same. Each person has their own unique genetic make up, thoughts, beliefs, practices, etc that are all going to influence their rehab.

My premise for this discussion was to raise an awareness that often people expect too much from their medical staff based on uncontrollable circumstances or circumstances that aren’t necessarily controllable by the medical staff themselves.

I think we are missing a point (you are spot on, by the way).  All medical situations are handled individually, including their recoveries. The medical professionals should monitor these injuries and they should have enough data to determine when recovery is not going as well as it should be or that the player is still vulnerable for a recurrence of that injury.  At some point, the doctors tell the coach when the player is able to return, based on the observations and feedback they receive, including range of motion tests, xrays, etc.  That decision--in the cases of Cam Newton (waiting 3 months before having surgery that proved to be ineffective--maybe due to his rehab program, maybe scar tissue, etc.), Ryan Kalil (has had neck issues for 2+ years--probably his reason for retiring considering some Cs have played beyond mid thirties), Olsen's foot, Thompson, and the decision to play Williams.

I get that all teams have injuries, but recurrences of the same injury in this manner?  Take Luke--people say he was not the same player this year--he is physically in his prime--concussions.  Is he getting the best medical oversight?

I wonder if the coach or organization does not want doctors who will give the coach what he wants when the player is in the gray area.  RR throws the "doctor cleared him" in reporters faces (Williams, Cam) when it is convenient, then they put a player on IR for fumbling.  Maybe they have lost sight of what safety is about.
