Rhys Lloyd

Lloyd is #2 in the NFL in TB% and that's with teams returning kicks 5 yards deep because our STs coverage is terrible. You take him out of the equation and we go from having one of the best at kickoffs to one of the worst (either Kasay or Baker qualifies) and put more pressure on a coverage unit that's already dead last in the league. Good lord, who is so important that we need this roster spot for anyway?

When you're the only team that uses an active roster spot for a kick off man, you better be in #1.

Cut Lloyd and Kasay and find a new kicker that can do both. It really is that simple. Kasay just doesn't have it.

Yep... we need to go into serious re-building mode in a lot of areas... good thing we have all those draft picks stockpiled...

I mean seriously what the hell has happened... last year Kasay didn't miss, Lloyd kicked kick-offs out of the damn end zone and Baker had a big boot... this year, they all suck?

I found the main problem:

While I don't disagree with that, and have said for a while now that Crossman needs to go, how much blame can you place on him for the lack of production from the three kickers? I mean his coaching might suck, but they're the ones that actually kick the ball.

I find it odd that three decent players would suddenly start to suck after one offseason.

Perhaps there is a common thread between them?

This. It's time for a 2-for-1 swap. We need to find a young kicker, and let Kasay retire with dignity (ie: force him to retire), and send Lloyd back to the soccer league.

I thought about that too... what could it be? Did someone (Crossman) try and work on their mechanics or something?

I suspect it is a combination of things including: poor practice, not enough practice, and misinformed mechanical instruction. Most of the problems I believe could be linked directly back to Crossman and that this would be observable if one were to have the privilege of being able to closely scrutinize the team and coaches at practice.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
