This "Hybrid" Defensive Scheme

I know it's a fun discussion to break down player types and various schemes but are we just getting a bunch of coach jargon yet again regarding this direction?

Sure, it will all actualize in how they reassemble this defense but I feel like we're being swindled again similar to when Rivera initially said we were going to be bringing hybrid approach.

Anyone think it's going to just stand pat for the most part with soft zone schemes in nickel 70% of the time with the occasional A-Gap disguises, random blitzes and typical 4-3 gap assignments?

I call BS.

I call bs on everything this group says. They have a shot to cut 18 mil from the books, and get us 30 something mil in cap room. What do they do? Keep 14 mil on the books between shaq and smith lol. I am almost done wasting money on jerseys, tickets, and other stuff associated with these jack ass clowns.

We did bring a hybrid approach much of 2011 and 12.  By 2013 we had perfect personnel for the 4-3. 2 good traditional defensive ends and 3 good nicely matched DTs in Edwards, Star, and Short  along with a great traditional 4-3 MLB  Kuechly surrounded by TD and Blackburn when we played all 3 linebackers. There wasn't a reason to do anything hybrid anymore. Once we had the DL talent there was no purpose and messing around with guys like Keiser and Applewhite.

It will be interesting to see what this means now but going away from the hybrid stuff was the absolute correct thing to do in 2013 and yielded our best defense in a long time.

I post when I have something I care to share. Do I not have the right? I've been reading this board for years, and been to every home game, and atl game for the last 18 years. Hope that meets your standards

There's a handful of posters that seem to think that the Panthers are ran in a fashion that actual successful organizations like the Patriots and Steelers could only dream of achieving.

Shaq is actually a quality player.... without TD, he is going to shine.  Torrey on the other hand... what a joke

As far as moving to a 3-4, that would be a huge transition and would take 2-3 years until we actually could be decent at it.  We simply don't have the personnel.   I could see us mixing packages more if we want to get guys like Haynes in a standup rusher position or to get more speed on the field, but switching full-time to a 3-4 wouldn't be a fast or smooth transition with our current group

Shaq isn't worth 9 mil. Cut and renegotiate. Wre could target a DE and make a play for thomas, honey badger, or adams. Then draft a DE, center, and LT or throw moton to LT and draft a RT. This franchise is killing my joy

Shaq’s been rated a top 10 lb by many sites such as pff  and bleacherreport to name a few. Mind you this was in limited playing time. He’s going to shine with TD gone. Whoever wants Shaq gone doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Cut him and he’s getting paid by another team. He’s not renegotiating with us when other teams will pay him. If he goes, we have another hole in our defense we have to fill.

If we cut him, he's gone.  And then what? Just another gaping hole to fill.   Let him play this year in a more natural position for him (not a hybrid nickel).  I guarantee you he has a year well worth the 9 mill

Yep, exactly.  Dudes who want him gone don't know football.  You can't blame him for having to guard slot WR's... should've never happened.  He is meant to be in TD"s role, but since he's gotten here, that role has been filled

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
