My point about third-round picks was that they often don't come in and immediately contribute. On draft night, look at the threads and posts of people whining that we wouldn't get an instant superstar with our third-round compensatory pick because we used it on a backup quarterback.

There are plenty of guys in the third round who contribute immediately. I think that was his point on Reid and Harrison.

I think the two overpays we will regret are Little and Scarlett. Not that I loved Little, but I am hopeful. By regret, I don’t think or at least I’m hoping we don’t regret the players but I do think we could have waited 10 picks and kept 77 and I think we could have gotten Scarlett as an UDFA or just traded next year’s 5th/6th to get him in the 6th/7th. I think we could have had Dieter/Saunders or a Saftey like Chauncey at 78 and Omenihu in the 5th. I think Omenihu May end up being like Maurice Hurst where people wonder why the hell he went so late.

It became cool not to like Little among the pre-draft community but there are a few undeniable facts about him. He played in the SEC. His measurables are excellent. Personally I love the idea of him in the second especially if they take their time with him. Of course I wanted to keep our third. If you could promise me that nobody else would take him then the trade up is foolish. That is an impression we are left with because he wasn’t loved in the final draftnik evaluation but obviously we don’t know what would happen if we hadn’t traded up. He truly was one of a couple of bonafide  LTs left...

You won’t find any argument from me on Scarlett. Since I’ve been following the Panthers their latter round drafting has been poor.

I can justify Little in the 2nd because he has the raw attributes, we have a very good OL coach and I hope that he isn’t rushed into the lineup. I would have been rather unhappy had we not taken an edge and overdrafted Little in the first. My concern is that I am a big Moton fan and there’s a chance he maybe marginalized again. I really get the impression that RR and Hurney aren’t fans. Hope I’m wrong.

You don’t have any disagreement on Moton. If he isn’t the RT, then I have no idea what we are doing. Heck, his rookie year I have no doubt he was better than Kalil once we saw how good he was last year.

What do you see them doing with Daryl W then though?

I sure hope we don't end up regretting the Little move. I didn't like the trade up, but if he turns out to be even a serviceable LT then he was well worth the move.

I'll believe that this organization is serious about finding a legit FS when there's even the slightest of evidence that's the case. We actually do spend decent draft capital on the position, we seem obsessed with drafting CBs with poor measurables to try to convert them to FS. Charles Godfrey, Sherrod Martin, and now Gaulden were all primarily CBs in college who no one thought would be able to translate to the NFL at CB. You have to go all the way back to 2000, nearly 20 years ago, to find an actual college safety that we drafted to play FS. That was Deon Grant out of Tennessee.

I'm a fan of Deon Grant and I'm a big fan of Mike Minter, but honestly both of those guys would be largely forgettable for most teams. We only remember them so fondly because by and large, we field straight up trash at the safety positions. Particularly FS.

I agree with the 5th round pick. I've seen you mention Omenihu a few times and I'll just add a few names I would have preferred too - Joe Jackson, Mack Wilson, D'andre Walker, Michael Jackson, and Blake Cashman. Dang, this was a deep draft cause all of those guys have a good chance at being a starter/top backup. Only shining light on Scarlett was when ex-scout Jim Nancey said he was one of his favorite players overall. Still, if you go back and "redraft". I would not change picks 1,2,3,4, or 6. If you dont trade and keep 47 and 77, by the looks it seems Little was well worth it.

47 Id pick Nasier Adderley(who went at 60). 77 Chase Winovich(same pick). LT would be a giant hole sorta like FS is...... All that said this is by far my most favorite Herniay draft class. Most of the time I only agree with one pick, but I feel he had about as good of draft as possible.

Burns and Miller I loved. Daley and Godwin were fine. I honestly wasn't a big fan of Little. It wouldn't shock me if we regret not grabbing Ford and have Moton at LT, but I hope it works out. I know there was a tackle "run", but I think people are wrong thinking that Little was at the top of everyone's list. I think we were the only team with a 1st round grade on him. No way a LT with multiple first round grades on him falls to 37. Even the Bills thought we were going Ford. He had dropped out of many top 50 lists except for PFF, whose grades were purely based on college. If you just went based on combine drills (not measurements, the actual drills), Little was down near the bottom and I honestly think he would have been there at 47 and 78 was way too much to give up. Give me Saunders or a safety at 77 and Omenihu in the 5th (use next year's 5th to get a 6th for Scarlett) and then it's as good as possible.

Also, just an FYI, but Winovich went 1 pick before our 3rd, which was 78.

Little is the true foundation on this draft, I mean either Burns or Miller should be a legit 8-year NFL starter. I definitely see your point about the Panthers being one of the few having a first round grade. Look at Houston, they were dead set on drafting an LT and passed on Little. Not going to lie, I watched Littles' combine and it was rather bad overall. I have a rule about rookies- "No judgment till the very start of season 2".

I've looked at the Panthers draft picks many times and did too many fanspeak mocks, they had pick 77. Pats traded with Seatle which traded 37 for 47 & 77 form Panthers.
