Jeff Garcia

New guy here, but an original Panthers fan.

I apologize if this has been addressed, and it's probably a little late, but I was wondering why we didn't try to get Garcia rather than Feeley? I think he's the perfect fit for the offensive philosophy. Steady, experienced QB who doesn't make many mistakes. He's also a very accurate short-to-medium range passer.

Welcome to the Huddle.

It has indeed been addressed, in fact well before we even pursued Feeley. Most here subscribe to the notion that Garcia isn't that great outside of West Coast offenses. Be that as it may, I don't see how Feeley would be a better option.

Perhaps the real reason -- as Garcia has publicly stated -- is that he wants to be a starter. I sincerely think Fox is opposed to bringing in talent that could threaten or actually supplant Jake Delhomme as the starter.

John Fox's style isn't a West Coast offense style of play, with short/intermediate passing being the crux of offensive momentum.

Fox's style is more of the old Air Coryell style which operates off of a power running game that attempts to get 8 or more defenders in the box against the run, opening up deep strike passing. (The strategy was coined for Don Coryell who used it extensively with the San Diego Chargers during the Dan Fouts years.)

Garcia, besides being an older, short-term opportunity, doesn't fit the mold very well, and there may have also been an issue of price tags with how close we were up against the cap.

Then why did we throw 45 dink and dunk passes last game?

Because, if we get Garcia or Feeley, or Moore then we're free to criticize their shortcomings and talk about how they wouldn't work in the passing offense that Fox would like to run. Nevermind the fact that our current QB doesn't work in any offense and can't even run the offense that we are using.

Point is, Fox doesn't trust Jake in there, and he doesn't trust any of his other options. Our passing offense will be based around short passes until we get either A) a new QB that Fox is confident in or B) a new coach. So saying someone can only complete shorter passes well, and using that as a bad thing, makes people look a little silly at this point... seeing as Jake can't even do that.. and that's what we're asking of our QB.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
