Veteran QB Options

I don't really believe in the David Carr effect. I think guys either have it or they don't and if rough going early on derails them they probably never had it to begin with.

Derek Carr got off to a pretty nice start, but the longer he plays the more he looks like David.

Gotta disagree. I think not only can you beat the fight out of a guy, but there's the more tangible effect of injuries.

Heck, we've even been worried about that with Newton.

I am just not sold on preseason hall of famers.  Or the Saints being stupid and cutting someone they used a 3rd round pick to get.

If they trade him, they will want to recoup that loss.  I don't want to trade anything close to a 3rd round for Bridgewater.

We don't know what they'd want in return though. It might be enough for them to just get something rather than nothing.

Plus the thing about Hill is that the Saints don't just play him at backup quarterback. Yhey use him as a Swiss army knife fairly frequently during the regular season.

Even if Bridgewater is a slightly better quarterback, he doesn't have that dimension.

If he doesn't have anymore fight in him than that then he just wasn't cut out for the long-term anyway. After setting the NFL record for the most sacked QB in history with 76 as a rookie, he was only sacked 15 times in 12 games in his second season. He still sucked every bit as badly.

Saints spent a 3rd rounder and 7 mill just for 1 year of Bridgewater. No way they cut him.

They might not, and they might not want to trade him to a division rival either. Person acknowledges that within the article.

To be fair though, Person isn't the only guy who's speculated that the Saints might not hang on to Bridgewater.

We lose Cam, and we're going to struggle anyway.

That's the basis of my thought process. I highly doubt any veteran outcast we could land this close to the regular season is going to be able to provide much. Might as well stick with the current group and evaluate them for the future. Then again, I'm not Ron Rivera or Marty Hurney who very well may need a playoff berth to continue to have a job. That's a much different lens through which to view this situation.

Carr isn't really the only example of this though. He's just the one that gets brought up the most frequently.

The thing you also have to remember about Carr though is that his initial coaching was absolute dog sh-t. When I read that the Texans weren't teaching him to read defenses and instead just had him throwing to spots, I couldn't believe it.

There's not enough patience in sports in general. Constant turnover in situations where a seed you just planted (and didn't water) doesn't even have a chance to sprout before you declare it dead. It's ridiculous to me.

Just really short-sighted much of the time for me. I know you want butts in the seats, but growing pains are part of the process of developing teams/players.

And that's a big deal.

If Newton isn't an option, would you be comfortable pinning your playoff hopes to the performance of Kyle Allen?

That's not to say any of the other options are exactly inspiring either, but the only box they'd really have to check would be "better than Kyle Allen".

Which also might be precisely why they'd keep Bridgewater. Playing Hill as that Swiss army knife exposes him to a lot more potential injury situations than the typical backup QB. If you're going to do that, you probably have to keep three QBs.

The speculation doesn't make sense considering they spent a ton on a win now emergency option

Overall, I agree. But, I think we've been plenty patient enough with Rivera. The only guys who have been with their current team longer than Rivera are Belichick, Payton, Carroll, Tomlin, Harbough, and Garrett. Rivera and Garrett are the only two without a ring.
