You know that friend who makes way more money than you, who takes you to lunch and then asks you to pick up the check?

That's Tepper.

No literally, that's Tepper. Felix Sabates said he's seen him do it.

Didn't Felix Sabates try, unsuccessfully to insert himself into the bidding for the Panthers? I seem to remember him BSing his way into the conversation, even though he's simply rich and not 'capital W' Wealthy.

There have been rumblings that the Charlotte Pope & Foundry site may be an option one day for a new stadium site.

There's that and the 200 acres out on Carowinds Boulevard that was discussed before. I think the area around the old Knights Stadium was mentioned as well.

Since I'm not a resident of Charlotte (or any other NFL city) and never plan to be, I don't really care. But it is definitely very frustrating to watch municipalities hand hundreds of millions to billionaires when there are no doubt a bunch of people struggling to make it within their city limits and plenty of infrastructure projects of more value to the general populace that could use that funding. That's really all I have on that.

He tried to get hos own ownership group together. When that failed, he tried to latch onto one of the existing groups. Got rejected by all of them, if I remember correctly.

I don't doubt him on that story though because other stories about Tepper have said the same thing.

I know a lot of people don't take Sabates seriously (I'd say he's probably about 50% full of bullsh-t, though not necessarily 100%) but he said during the ownership bids that Tepper absolutely wanted a new stadium at some point. It definitely looks like that could be true.

I don't understand. What is the negative from sharing with football? There is not any overlap in seasons? It's not like baseball and football where it creates a crap field for football so why do they need a stadium for just soccer at this point? Especially when the owner stated he wants a dome football stadium too?

I think it's the public funding aspect that tends to get some people angry.

100-200M is not going to build a new stadium, it's just upgrades to the current one, and the money would be spread over multiple years. I think we would see additional revenue to the city if we had an MLS team, but that's what exploratory committees will need to determine. What this closed door meeting tells me is that Tepper has probably heard back from MLS and received their stipulations for continued consideration. I doubt he'd ask to change the structure of the stadium unless he was fairly certain he'd be granted the franchise he's making the changes for.

Proposal:

David Tepper retains the employment of Ron Rivera after this season, the Panther's organization releases Cam, trades many critical and valuable team assets, goes full "Major League" in their operations, runs into push-back from Charlotte municipal government and North Carolina state government concerning funding, and applies to the NFL to move the franchise.

Discuss.

(Not saying the above is true or even that I have any evidence that it is true, just proposed for discussion.)

The hell needs to be changed for soccer that would require that kind of money?

The MLS always fears playing their product in large arenas due to the bad look of "empty seats".

Now I think the Charlotte area would pack BofA for MLS if Tepper rolled out a good product (a la (and no offense here) Arthur Blank in Atlanta), but that doesn't do anything to comfort MLS's *present* fears.
