Cam is eligible to return in the playoffs, unlikely as that scenario would be

Admittedly, there are many things that would have to fall into place for Cam to return this post season.

His return to health and the Panthers making the playoffs being the most obvious of those.

However, stranger things have happened and the loss of Allen leaves the Panthers with a backup that has never started a single game, much less the playoffs.

I don't think having a healthy Cam dressed and ready to on the sidelines come playoff time is beyond the realm of possibility.

After that, it is anybody's guess what might happen.

You have to admit though, CBD's post above makes an awful lot of sense.

I honestly wouldn't have a problem with that.

If his future is not with us, it'd be kind of selfish to ask him to do things that could potentially hurt his future chances somewhere else.

And honestly, in a scenario like that, going on injured reserve makes a lot more sense.

It makes total sense.

They have been trying to get an extension since 2017 to no avail.  With Cam turning 31 this offseason they are going to do whatever it takes to get another contract.

I dont believe the front office made the decision to IR him.  I think Cams camp made that call.  Otherwise he'd still be on the active roster.

Why automatically assume Cam returning for the playoffs would end badly?

I think a healthy, albeit somewhat rusty, Cam would be more than capable of filling Allen's role as game manager.

Cam wouldn't need to be outstanding (though he could be) he would just need to be serviceable and efficient.  That would be enough to boost his stock with teams looking for QB in 2020.  A distinct advantage for a QB looking to negotiate a new deal.

Take a look back at CBD's posts.

He's already explained that side of it as well as I could.

Thats all highly plausible.

That scenario also makes it sound more likely that he's going to be looking for something longer from another team rather than just playing out the final year of his contract with us.

(I didn't really buy that idea anyway)

And again, I wouldn't blame him. His next contract is likely as final contract. When I get the best he can?

For players, every time they step on the field it is a gamble.

So, it should go without saying that Cam's return for the playoffs would be a gamble.

It would also be a gamble for a healthy Cam not to return for the playoffs if he is capable of playing.

If Cam expects anything close to what constitutes the going rate for a franchise QB these days (without being relegated to a perennial losing franchise) he is going to have to demonstrate his ability to get it done on the field.

There is no better way to do that than leading your current team to victory in the playoffs.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Earned.

Playing on a 1 year deal at 31 years old with the last 2 seasons ended by injury... not a chance in hell.  Cam would hold all the risk.

Possible, but it's worth asking what happens if you look bad?

Between the two scenarios, one where you show poor tape, and when were you show no tape, which one hurts you more?

Got a question, though. You said they've been looking for an extension since 2017 and the team has said no?

That strikes me as something that would make a few people a bit...upset.

Classic glass half full/half empty argument.

It is unlikely this scenario comes to pass, but it killed a few minutes in an uneventful morning.

I am sure they are frustrated as hell.  He probably deserved a contract extension in the 2017 offseason.  But Cam bet on himself, played ball and in the end it bit them in the ass.

No way they make the same mistake twice.
