The case for drafting a DT (Brown) at #7

Outside of DT being a 30 TD sized hole in our defense, Dee Brown appears to be the kind of guy that can come and fill in some of these leadership voids that we have in our locker room and on the field. Luke is a genius and the greatest LB we have ever had, but he has never been the vocal leader that TD was to get us straightened out on the field for so many years. KK is in training room more than he is on the field now. Poe is a mute, and addison is one of those guys who feeds into the energy of the lead dog. From watching Dee Brown play at auburn and some of his interactions pre snap and on the sideline (camera is ALWAYS on him) it appears that he has the intangibles of a vocal leader that will help our soft a* defense in the trenches and save the culture in Carolina.

And we had no DTs keeping people off Luke this year--did you see how frustrated he was?  DTs shooting gaps to get sacks do not maintain gap discipline.  Brown makes Luke and Shaq better.

If only he could rush the passer....lol

First Team: Derrick Brown, Auburn

As physically imposing a force that there was during the 2019 season, Brown made his presence felt in every contest but most notably against the toughest tests on Auburn's schedule. He finished with the second-highest pass-rushing grade among all interior defenders and had three of his four highest game grades come against Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Tallying 34 total pressures, Brown recorded five sacks, 10 QB hits and 19 more hurries while he batted four passes at the line, made 34 defensive stops and 41 total tackles without a single missed tackle attempt to his credit this year.

His tackling was unmatched this season and he was the country's most dominant interior defender against the run. He made 11 tackles for no gain or a loss and was the only interior defensive lineman to record 33 tackles without a single miss against the run.

What I'm saying dude is generational...hes a blue chip that fixes our issues and is young and cheap

For those of you insisting on a pass rushing DT---

Do you think we need another pass-rushing DT?   Do you get why our LBs were getting reached like never before?  Our DTs did not earn their respect and they did not hold their ground--probably because they were rushing the passer...Pressuring the QB was not an issue this year---pressuring the RB was.

This article explains what you are missing in relation to Brown:

"https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/sports/college/auburn/2019/11/04/auburn-football-defensive-tackle-derrick-brown-makes-ridiculous-look-routine-ole-miss-nfl-draft-sec/4153765002/

Brown’s stat totals aren’t earth-shattering. He has 37 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks so far. Those totals rank fourth, second and second on Auburn’s defense, respectively. He doesn’t rank among the nation’s top-100 players in any of those categories — to compare, Ohio State defensive lineman Chase Young ranks tied for fourth with 15 ½ tackles for loss and first with 13 ½ sacks.

But the impact the standout Auburn defensive tackle has made during his senior season can’t fully be measured in a box score.

Take the Tigers’ season-opening win over Oregon in Arlington, Texas. Brown finished that game with three tackles and nothing else. If you go back and re-watch that game, though, you’ll see no shortage of plays where Brown is powering his way into the backfield and throwing blockers around like rag dolls. He was a significant factor in the defense holding the Ducks’ offense to just 133 yards and seven points in the second half of a come-from-behind 27-21 victory."

He does his job, and taking on double teams and keeping folks off his LB is part of it.  THAT is what this defensive front was missing.  Not more pass rush.

I think he will be even better in the nfl, taking on doubles and then throwing them to pass then rusher...this guy is a every down DT even in a nascar package.

Derrick Brown has made so many great plays for Auburn, it's hard to pick a favorite.  But I'm gonna pick the one in the vid linked below for its weirdness.

Let me set the scene:  The Auburn defense in this case was experiencing one of its rare moments of confusion.  A defender (#1, Big Kat Bryant) was coming off the field and he didn't realize that in doing so he was leaving Auburn a man short on defense (only ten men on the field).  A coach on the sideline quickly recognized what was happening and urgently pushed Derrick Brown on the field to replace him, but Brown had barely entered the field by the time the ball was snapped.

The play ended up being a screen pass by Ole Miss to the running back, which play just coincidentally was run to the side of the field upon which Derrick Brown just entered.

What happened next was pretty damn hilarious.

I was at that game and had no idea what had happened because I was confused by the number (#5).  I was like, wait a minute... do we have another #5? (In college, players can wear the same numbers as long as one is on offense and one is on defense.) And, if not, how in the fug was Brown out there to make that open-field tackle?

It was awesome and hilarious.  Auburn has a great defensive coordinator who has been putting great defenses on the field for years now.

Unfortunately, however, we have a head coach who is the reverse-Polish Rivera, i.e. he’s a purported “offensive genius” but, without talent like Cam Newton or Nick Marshall, the offense he trots out every week is utterly putrid.

That must have been amazing to see...the speed tho, this kid is gonna be good, I bet he sets the combine in fire. I think with this one pick and resign Bradberry and Tre and our defense is fixed! People don't understand the stess it puts on the secondary when the run isnt being stopped.

Joe Marino and Kyle Crabbs from the draftnetwork had a segment on Brown on their Podcast.  Both said they wouldnt waste his talents at NT.  Both talked that Brown is more than capable of playing 3-4 DE.

Give me Brown as a 3-4 DE

Then get the Big NT in the 2nd double dipping

I do too.  And the fact that he can play every position, every down is a good point and one that makes him valuable.  We will move him around the LOS, creating issues for the blocking schemes, etc.

He is not a top 10 pick  because he got 4 sacks or 38 tackles.  People in the know can see his value.
