Why you don't fire John Fox

Matt Foley

It's a valid discussion, but the name that always comes up in my mind is Tony Dungy.

Suppose the Bucs had stuck with Dungy? Would he have won there? Or was a change the catalyst that was needed to get both the Bucs and Dungy to their respective Super Bowls?

The same situation could happen here, though if it does I hope we pick a better successor than Tampa did. After that one year, Gruden was generally the picture of mediocrity.

It's ironic to think that the Titans' success last year came from benching Young in favor of Collins, and their (small amount of) success this year came from benching Collins in favor of young.

In both cases, Fisher has shown a willingness to bench whomever is entrenched as the starter -- that's something I don't think Fox is willing to do.

But guys, the Titans are 3-6 right now. We could learn a lot from them.

They were either 0-5 or 0-6 after that 59-0 debacle at New England, and everyone said "he's lost the team, he needs to go." Now they are playing like the team that went 13-3 last year, and things look bright for next year.

Fox is a top 10 coach. If you're dumb enough to run him off, you get what you deserve.

If Fox had a quarterback that was a top-five draft choice he would.

LOL. Sorry, top 10 coaches actually get back-to-back winning seasons. Last years team would have been 8-8 or 9-7 if we didn't play the Raiders, Lions, Chiefs, and any other terrible team on our schedule.

I realize that Fox has only once drafted in the top five, and that he made a great decision in drafting Peppers. Still, that he doesn't have a better option at quarterback is no one's fault but his own.

I started running over the league's coaches, and I think you may very well be right that Fox is in the top ten. But you can't possibly agree with the offensive playcalling this year. Do you think we're seeing the offense run solely by Davidson, without Fox meddling?

Instead of looking at Buffalo this year, look at Tennessee. You give a guy who has proven himself over the long run the benefit of the doubt.

Fisher has had a long tenure in Tennessee with some success.

But in his 14 years there he has had 6 seasons where he's finished above .500 and 8 seasons where he's finished at .500 or below. This season like will make it 9 losing seasons.

6 of those winning seasons they made the playoffs and 3 of those were one and out. Winning a playoff game 3 times in 14 years certainly isn't a water mark I'd like us to be satisfied with.

That's not good enough for me, sorry. :piggy:

Slightly different. Titans hit a low we have yet to achieve, 0-6 and a historiacal loss to the patriots. Vince Young was a top 5 choice who already took the team to the playoffs, and was proably the future anyway.

Well Fisher may still have lost the team. Only reason they are winning now is because the owner had to step in and tell Fisher to start Young. So yeah, your thread = Fail.

I know they are different circumstances, but my point remains that Fisher has been willing to make the change whereas Fox has not. I don't think many people can deny that Delhomme has been more detrimental to the Panthers this season than Collins has to the Titans.

And if the Panthers were to stick with the guy with the proven track record, then Fox would not be here. Siefert would.

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
