PFF estimates for the top 50 free agent contracts

PFF

I won't put which teams PFF is guessing the FA are going to go to, just their contract values.  That shows approximately how much the Panthers would have to pay to get one of these guys.

Here are the OL in the top 50 free agents:

  • 2. OT TERRON ARMSTEAD, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS — Three years, $60 million
  • 9. OT ORLANDO BROWN JR., KANSAS CITY CHIEFS — Five years, $105 million
  • 12. C RYAN JENSEN, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS — Three years, $39 million
  • 18. OG BRANDON SCHERFF, WASHINGTON COMMANDERS — Three years, $50 million
  • 26. OG LAKEN TOMLINSON, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS — Three years, $27 million
  • 32. T DUANE BROWN, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS — Two years, $20 million
  • 38. G CONNOR WILLIAMS, DALLAS COWBOYS — Three years, $20 million
  • 40. G JAMES DANIELS, CHICAGO BEARS — Five years, $50 million
  • 46. C BEN JONES, TENNESSEE TITANS — Three years, $20 million

So getting one good free agent interior OL will cost from 7-13M per year.   A LT will be in the range of 10-20M.

This is how much the average NFL franchise would have to pay.  We have a terrible coach and no QB.  If we want one of these guys, we'll have to pay more.  And our cap is a wreck.  Again.

all true

This is Robby Anderson's cap hit for 2022:   $16,836,666

For that amount we could have gotten two top interior OL from this year's class.

Things like that make me want to cry . . .

That and our FO is having discussions about whether or not we have room to extend DJ. SMH. Bunch of effing morons. How we got worse as a team while blowing our cap space and throwing away solid IOL draft picks is beyond me.

To think some folks think the huddlers wouldn’t have this team in better shape the past 3 years. A blind squirrel with a limp could have managed our personnel better.

One thing that I consistently see in the Huddle is the long term view.  People suggest draft picks or free agent acquisitions based on how it would help the team best in the long haul.  It's the strategic plan.

What I've seen with Rhule is much more impatient decision making.  It seems to be based on the short term and without too much long-term thought really put into it.  It's the knee-jerk view of roster building.  That's what a coach does when they think they will get fired soon or quit.

So it's no surprise that the Huddle would likely have done a somewhat better job than the Panthers have accomplished over the last 2 or 3 years.  Maybe even much better.

Bridgewater to TB?

Makes sense.  TB has salary cap problems so they can't afford a lot of $$ for a QB.  And Bridgewater will come cheap.

But he's also a good fit.  The team is already pretty built up from the recent push for the Super Bowl so Bridgewater could slide right in.   He's a smart, dink-and-dunk guy not so different from what Brady was doing.  Read the defense and get the ball out to some low-risk option right away.

Also a warm weather stadium with lots of warm weather opponents.   So no power arm needed to cut through the cold wind of December games in Buffalo or Cleveland.

Or Darnold's $18M would also solve that issue....or at least contribute about 85% towards signing two OL.

    • Sellers has bust written all over him..unless he goes to a team that can afford to sit him where he can learn the game and develop without the pressure of starting immediately. Not sure that is the Panthers. If we do go rookie in the draft, he can't be viewed as a day 1 starter. He does have potential, but I think it is going to have to be a handle-with-care situation.
    • Nothing will change with the qb situation until Tepper is convinced Young is not viable. Until that point, it will be Young. During that time, any shortcomings of Young will be because he does not have the necessary supporting cast, and/or coaches are failing him with faulty schemes and defective gameplans.  So, until Tepper is out, Young is in.
    • Young is the kind of QB who will go as far as the team drags him 90% of the time. And once in a long while he'll explode and light the opposing team up. That is not anywhere near where we need to be as a team. What' worse is that we've won way too many games this season due to an extremely easy schedule. So we can't select a top QB in the draft, and a free agent QB is usually not the answer.  The Panthers fell victim to a long stretch of bad QBs coming out of college. Even if we had made different moves and selected any number of different QBs coming out, we still would have ended up with a bust most likely. Bryce is a bust. Tua is a bust. Zach Wilson? Yikes. Trey Lance. Justin Fields. Mac Jones. Kenny Picket. CJ Stroud. My point is that a lot of teams were devastated by this stretch of bad QBs coming out of college, but we were dumb enough to trade the farm for one of them.  The smart move? Tale the 2 first round picks from the Rams for Burns, and keep CMC. Sit tight. Whatever QB falls in your lap in the draft, take him. Then use the other two first round picks to build up the o-line on the cheap. This isn't Morning GMing. I said take the Rams deal at the time. We have not had a good GM ever in franchise history.  No more trading up for QBs. Clearly is a total guessing game. Stay put. Trade vets for draft picks and start the rebuilding process with a new GM and new coaches. Cut Bryce and bring him back on a vet min deal. Then cut him again for being trash. He's done here if I had any say.
