And yet, Baker STILL wanted to come here.

(although seriously -- have we heard from people who know whether Rhule truly is a players' coach vs what we see and comment on here?)

Not originally...

Early word was that he was as disinterested in us as some of our guys were in him.

That's why the "talking to him" thing was important. He had to be sold on the idea.

Our buddy Ellis for one.

Heck, even Gantt addressed the question (I think in one of his Ask the Old Guy columns) confirming at the time that Rhule does still have final say but has been asked/suggested to listen more to those around him.

You mean this one where he said Rhule appears to still be lead chair?   It says the exact opposite of what you said.    What exactly from John Ellis says that he has some source that Tepper reigned in Rhule?

You're not exactly good at reading, are you? 😆

i mean clearly from a public perception standpoint the Carolina Panthers intentionally altered Matt Rhule’s availability and presence after his nightmare season. That alone tells you their has been a shift in how he is being viewed.  They made him disappear and when he returned the GM was the lead publicly on all things.  A deviation from his prior seasons.  Plus there is the fact the HC that was booed out of BOA last year until Tepper brought Cam in….had his staff revamped with at least 3 guys that could take his job temporarily and all 3 be more qualified for the role than Rhule was day 1.

Or Rhule just chose that he didn't want to deal with the press.

He fired his OC, so he had to replace that.  As for the other staff, some were fired and others left of their own accord.

It doesn't matter, you're going to believe whatever you want anyway.

    • He has attempted 8 shootout goals in his NHL career and made 1. He is among our worst SO guys on the entire roster in terms of career stats.
    • Against Miami, the Panthers were behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter facing a 4th - 5. Young completed a 21 yard pass and they went on to score 7 on that drive. Then in the 4th, down by 4, they faced a 4th - 5 and again, he completed a 17 yard pass and they went onto score a TD for the win. He also accounted for 2 of the 3 TD's.  As I said, he got them in that mess and no doubt, Rico gets credit as well, but missing on either of those 4th down conversions hands the ball over and results in 1 or 2 less TD's giving them a loss. As you said though, that's just a small quibble. The real question is how does the FO see it?  I am guessing they see it as something to build on. I think most peope here see it as a total loss and fully expect the FO to see it that way as well. Time will tell.
    • Kochetkov is just too streaky. TBD if Freddie is doing that too. Freddie is the more reliable goalie over his career. The Bussi kid looks like he could be a solid #2 eventually.  Just need to figure out the #1 guy. Same as almost every year. It's not talent, it's consistency and being able to step up in the playoffs.
