the panthers are not just one player away from being a great team

people keep saying this as if jake is the only problem on the team. Jake blows but the Panthers are terribly flawed to the core and even if they had peyton manning or tom brady they'd still need a number 2 receiver, 2 starting defensive tackles, a special teams coach, an entirely new special teams, and depth across the board. they're probably two draft away from having all of that.

this isn't just one problem

signing mike vick and bill cowher won't send them to a super bowl

So if you were to take Jake as is right now, plug him into the Saints offense, would they be able to compensate for the lack of play from the QB?

And if you were to put Brees in place of Jake, would we be 7 loss team right now?

stop being stupid babies and over simplifying a very complicated problem

Stop over complicating a very simple solution

FYI - Don't get pissy of my response, just playing devils advocate. There are two ways to look at the situation. I CHOOSE to blame all of it on Jake. I feel if we had a franchise QB, he would lead this team and make everyone around him better.:D

The team obviously has flaws and not every turnover has been Jakes fault. But take Jake's 18 INTs and make them something more inline with the NFL average of 7 or 8 and you have at the very least a good team. It's impossible to say great team because there's too many variables, but we'd at least be a team in the playoff hunt.

Jake's play has been pretty bad, but that has served in some cases to oversimplify things in the minds of folks and think that this was the only problem. Far from it.

The notion that we were just a QB away has been bandied about more than once this season, but it was never valid.

I just don't buy into the notion at all. It's very naive to think that you can add players while keeping everything else constant. Some players get better next season and some get worse, some strategies that worked before may not work any more and vice versa, the opponents and who they have and how they operate may change, the rules may alter how the game is played, you may be healthier or more battered by next season's end, etc.

Well poo, Mike Vick won't guarantee us a Super Bowl?

*Goes to kill self*

No wait, a new HC will undoubtedly mean new Special Teams coaching.

We probably are 2 drafts from having the depth we need since Hurney likes to give away picks. But the 2010 draft and $20 million dollars in extra cap space to sign some quality talent with Julius Pepeprs dollars will certainly help. The 16.7 million we spent on Peppers this year would have retained a lot of the depth that left last year via free Agency as well, we probably wouldn't even have extended one Jake Delhomme.

That's the only thing possibly making the Panthers last 5 games interesting. What effect might even an average QB have on the Panthers as a whole.

There is no such thing as a perfect team. There are weaknesses in all teams. The key is to not let one of those weaknesses be the most important position in the game period. And weakness is an understatement. A good QB and healed injures makes the panthers a playoff contender in my mind. Maybe not a great team but a good one. A new qb does more that just fix that position, it motivates other players but showing them what they do is actual worth a poo.

Lets see the best RB tandem in the league.

Arguable the Best WR in the league

3 Solid TE

Good Offensive Line

Improving DT

Young DE's

OUTSTANDING LB Corp

Youthful DB's

Depth Weak

So we get a QB, WR, D-Line and add some depth. I wouldn't go to your extreme at all. We can Upgrade but EVERY Team needs to upgrade in one position or another.

The majority of our loses come from poor QB play. Get a solid QB and this team could compete against anyone.

Go Panthers

I think LB might actually be a concern for us. Davis and Beason are amazing but should we really be looking for Diggs to be the starter next year? Landon sucks and Conner hasn't shown he can play Diggs spot. I think Anderson is promising but who really knows. Athletically he's more than talented enough to overtake Diggs but I don't know why he can't beat him out.

In terms of players, I do think we're only two or three guys away. We need a QB, we need a #2 WR and we need a kick returner. Sure we could use depth and help at other positions, but there aren't any glaring weaknesses like there are at WR, QB and Return. Our special teams blow, but that's more a factor of coaching than the players. There's not a single team in the NFL that doesn't have needs, but we're in better spot than most.

Thank you. Everyone is pinning this bad season on Jake Delhomme but forget about the injuries and the fact that Jake has one reciever to go to and he double covered every play. John fox is a great coach, there just just not playing well, signing Vick would not fix the problem just create a numer of problems. Stop blaming Jake for everything and start thinking of the team.

Exactly, We might have the QB of the future in Moore. You are never going to know until you give him a shot. I do think we need to look in the draft for a solid back up. Definitely a WR backup for Smitty. Someone that can one day be groomed to be the #1 when Smitty retires. I think our KR issues stem from a poor special team play.

But we both agree NO TEAM is in a position that doesn't need anyone.

Go Panthers
