Lindy Ruff with an absolutely boneheaded decision to go with Blackwood.

From what I heard, this was a "scheduled" start for him.

And I was like "The hell??"

This isn't baseball.

This is crunch time.

You go with your best players!!!

Blackwood is NOT your best player.

This was an absolute GIFT by Ruff to Carolina.

Carolina was like "Here's the Division, NJ.  Enjoy!"

But NJ was like "Nah.  We're good."

So infuriating on my end.

You guys better take advantage of Ruff's idiocy and wrap up the Division.

All bets are off. Canes make their bad decisions during the trade deadline.

Welcome to Carolina and our coaching decisions as well.

Ok whip cream on dog poo time. Rangers lost in OT. Now all the canes need to do to guarantee first round home ice is 1 point in the next two.

canes CAN still win the division tmrw. Canes win and NJ loses. The metro is ours.

Yep.   Yet the Canes are doing all they can to NOT win it, though.

That was a brutal loss to Ottawa.

I thought when my Devils lost to the Bruins after the idiotic decision to start Blackwood by Ruff, that the Division was yours for the taking.

The Canes blew that opportunity last night so now with more winnable games for my Devils these final two games, the door has been swung back open after being slammed shut as far as the Division goes.

Canes will probably have to win the rest of their games to win the Division outright as I don't see the Devils losing to the Sabres or Washington.

Don’t sleep on the Sabres they are pushing hard for that second wild card spot. Pens and Florida have control though.

Definitely not sleeping on them although it does help that they will be on the 2nd half of a back-to-back when the Devils face them tonight.

I have no reason to believe Carolina will beat Detroit tonight. As I said last night, Buffalo is on the 2nd game of a back-to-back against NJ tonite and I expect NJ to jump ahead of the Canes for the Metro lead.

Canes squandered every possible opportunity to put space between them and the Devils and failed in every imaginable way. Game in hand, playing non-playoff teams, playing against call-up goalies... you name it, they had their chances.

So, the Canes fall to the 2 seed and will face the Rags. I don't expect a sweep, usually a home ice advantage might be good for 1 win; so I'll say NY in 5 games.

After that week long stretch when the Canes played Boston, the Rags twice, Toronto and Tampa Bay (they went 2-2-1), the remainder of the schedule, on paper, was easy compared to that:

Detroit, Montreal, NYI, Ottawa, Nashville, Buffalo, Ottawa... and they go 3-4.

Svechnikov goes down and the team immediately becomes a .500 team. Not saying he's the only reason, but.... among other things- subpar goaltending, the top line is either all or nothing and the last 7 games they should be on a milk carton they've been missing for so long.

On March 1, the Canes were 39-11-8. On April 1, they were 47-18-9. A 30-day stretch of 8-7-1 hockey is not playoff hockey.

NJ and Buffalo watch. Come on Sabres.  Help us here.

NJ is also fighting to clinch Home Ice against the Rags as well so it's not exactly a throwaway game for them.

This is going to be a game that is a nail-biter.

How’s Buffalo skating? Fast? That’s all they really has on us when we played.

    • I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.
    • At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.
    • Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
