Coach Sean Payton plans to do his level best to achieve two "records" in the Saints' regular-season finale against the playoff-bound Carolina Panthers.

With a victory Sunday at the Superdome, the Saints would finish 9-7 and post their second winning record under Payton in three seasons. With 402 passing yards, Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees would eclipse Dan Marino's NFL record of 5,084 set in 1984.

But Payton made it clear that he won't sacrifice one at the expense of achieving the other.

"We're playing to win the game," Payton said Monday. "We're not going to take a look at new players, the same way with the Detroit game. It's our jobs as coaches and players to win.

"It's a meaningful game because we have an opportunity to be 9-7. We think that's significant. Certainly in Carolina's case, it's an important game for them. With everything that has unfolded, this is an important game for both teams."

"What's important is winning," Payton said. "Certainly, a milestone like the record we're talking about is significant, but nonetheless what's most important to our team, to Drew Brees, to the organization, is winning this football game and finishing 9-7.

"That said, something like that is significant. But I think it's only rewarding if something like that happens when you play well and you win rather than just if you hang around and throw it around just for the sake of the record. Our job as coaches this week and as players is to get ready to put our best game plan together to beat the Carolina Panthers, not to throw for (402) yards."

"It's a milestone that's fairly uncommon," Payton said. "Honestly, it hasn't been a point of discussion with him or me at all, or with the offense at all. If you asked anyone in that room starting with Drew or the running backs or the offensive linemen if a coach has talked at all (about the record), I really haven't even discussed it with him.

"I think our players expect me -- the head coach -- and our staff to give them a plan to win the game, and they would all probably be supportive of Drew being able to get that within the confines of our game plan. What's most important is winning the game and Drew would tell you that, our players would tell you that and our staff would tell you that."

Saying all the right things. But My guess is they will try and win the game and if Brees gets 400+yards fine, but the win is more important, the way it should be. So no, I don't think there is a fix to get him the yards. Why would the Panthers even agree to something so monumentally stupid? If we can keep him on his back, he shouldn't get half of what he needs. I think that will be one motivating factor to this game, stopping Brees from getting the record. And also getting the #2 seed. This should be a very good game Sunday, with our defense showing they are ready to play in the playoffs and shutting down all that we face.

I hope along with a win, the Panthers keep Brees from reaching the record. I actually like Brees. But I don't want to see all the f*cking ESPN highlights of him breaking the record while carving up our secondary. Over and over they'll be showing videos of the Panthers getting burned on passing plays, even if we win the game.

30 years from now on NFL films they will be showing brees season record if we let him get it, I dont think we will, I believe that they will try to run against our banged up D lineand wont be that good, then I think they will start to air it out and I see us geting 3 picks

And NFL Films will end that segment by saying that the Panthers won the game anyway and went on to win the Super Bowl.

One can only hope!

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
