The QB Debate

this is a classic case where the data does not match the output. Levis had one of the worst offensive lines in the nation last year. There is no debating that.  There is no way KY had better pass protection than Alabama and OSU.....

could be a time to snap issue, as scrambling QBs tend to get sacked more trying to use their legs (Chicago) and with Levis being a slow processor taking sacks he wouldn’t have taken if he got the ball out sooner, just spitballing don’t watch either play really

I've been a Stroud guy most of the season, mostly because I just assumed Bryce was going to go #1 to Houston until they lost that pick. I love everything about Stroud, but there is something about Bryce I keep coming back to that I worry we will regret not taking him if he's able to stay healthy. I also have fomo if we pass on Stroud cause I love his size, and throwing ability. Ultimately its such a hard choice because they are both 21 and are just scratching the surface of their potential.

Unfortunately, I did watch every play. I've watched every play for all 4 QBs... and I can tell you that the data is off. Levis isnt a scrambler, he is a running QB. He mainly runs on exhaustion of options or designed running plays.

Kentucky's right tackle and center were awful... the RT was the worst right tackle in the nation. He had the lowest pass block win rate of any Tackle in the NCAA. It always doesnt help that the KY OC designed long developing plays similiar to what Shula did here. There is actually a really good breakdown of this in the latest QB school by JT O'Sullivan. You watch 5 min of that, and you would go back and edit your post about their oline, haha.

Now, if you are grading KY's run blocking, its on the oppposite side of the spectrum. They were an excellent run blocking team last year.

    • Its really wild to watch this part of the community boil down the success of the 2025 Panthers to whether or not BY9 busts or breaks out. Ill take middle of the road mistake free game manager that distributes the ball and orchestrates the offense.  If we can get that with a D that doesnt put us in a 27 point+ hole every week the team can improve. Id love a deep post season run but honestly at this point Id be ecstatic about feeling like we could win every week.   Jake is never going to get a yellow jacket but damn if he didnt make watching the team fun.     eta: I think too many people are looking for an I told you so moment over their pre-draft "evaluation" of Bryce
    • I consider last year Bryce's rookie year.....and I expect some regression/D adjustment in his second season in Canales' O.  Film is film.   So yeah, I agree....he won't be the dude that opened up the year week 1 or closed the door week 17.  We will get some dude in between it all most likely.  Which IMO puts us in a really awkward no man's land with Bryce.
    • The question is which Bryce shows up game 1. Do we get week 2 (2024) Bryce, or week 18 (2024) Bryce?  I will say that his progression after the benching last year was amazing. He literally got better every game - sans Dallas. Like every week he did something we hadn't seen him do before. And it wasn't luck, toss it up for grabs plays like Penix did against Carolina. Penix was just throwing the ball as hard as he could in the direction of a receiver and hoping they'd make a play for him. What we saw from Bryce was different. Decision making, reading defenses, recognizing blitzes and where they were coming from, knowing his hot, avoiding pressure and manipulating the pocket, throwing with anticipation, taking shots downfield, and running the ball surprisingly well. Stats don't always tell the story. Did he miss some throws that he should have made - sure did. But the clutch gene is strong with this one. One score game and Carolina has the ball with 2 minutes on the clock - I'm confident he'll give them a chance to win more than he doesn't.
