AFC Scout Breaks down the Panthers

The Boston Globe had an AFC scout anonymously break down the Carolina Panthers.

The scout mentions the team's injury problems, then breaks down some individuals. Among the scout's observations:

Jake Delhomme: "If I’m a safety, I’m licking my chops, the way he forces it to Steve Smith, the way you can bait him."

Matt Moore: "He’s been in the system long enough, and some of their receivers are excited about his deep ball. He’s got a bigger arm than Delhomme."

Julius Peppers: “The issue with [defensive end Julius] Peppers is effort. When he plays hard, he’s one of the most dominant guys in the game. The problem is he might only show up for 10 of 65 plays, and this is a guy who’s looking for big money."

The bottom line: "You let them hang around, they get the running game going, eat up a lot of clock, and then they have a chance.’’

“I think [the Panthers] are still dangerous. Anytime you can run the football in cold weather, you pose a threat, but their problems stopping the run hurts . . . You let them hang around, they get the running game going, eat up a lot of clock, and then they have a chance.’’

overall seems pretty on target.

re: the QB situation...

“[Delhomme’s] decision-making, he’s getting a little older, so some of that arm strength isn’t there, and he’s always had that gunslinger mentality. So it’s a combination of things. The arm isn’t as strong, he’s pressing, he has to make more throws, and make things happen. He was more successful last year, when they need him to be that complementary piece. Now, he looks overactive.

“You have [defensive backs] baiting him to throw, and having that mentality, he’s trying to put the ball in tight spaces. That isn’t necessarily the right mind-set for a guy with a good arm, and not a great one. If I’m a safety, I’m licking my chops, the way he forces it to Steve Smith, the way you can bait him. Other teams have done a nice job working his decision-making.

“Matt [Moore is] more of a game-manager than a gunslinger. Matt, maybe because he was drafted lower, understands interceptions are gonna get him out of the league quickly. He’s been in the system long enough, and some of their receivers are excited about his deep ball. He’s got a bigger arm than Delhomme. They’re high on him.

talked a good bit later on about peppers possibly to the pats in the offseason. said the problem with him was mental (duh).

Player spotlight

Could the Patriots be in the running for Peppers? The Panthers would have to tender the four-time Pro Bowler an offer of more than $20 million to keep him in 2010, so there’s a good shot he hits the market, and the Patriots showed an interest last year.

Asked about Peppers yesterday, director of player personnel Nick Caserio was coy on his team’s 2009 interest, saying, “I think that time of the year you talk about a number of different players. You’re going to have multiple discussions and I think whatever decisions we made, you know, that’s what we ended up doing.’’

The question, of course, is whether you can get down-to-down effort out of Peppers - and the Patriots have done that with other players in the past. If they could, his ability brings limitless possibilities.

“That’s why he’s such an enigma, he has that kind of potential,’’ the AFC scout said. “If you pay the guy, does he completely shut it down? A change of scenery might help, but it depends where he goes. Say he goes to Pittsburgh. He gets to play in the 3-4, they have that core leadership, they’ve won Super Bowls, and maybe it becomes similar to what [Randy] Moss had when he went to New England, and he said, ‘OK, I buy in, do my thing, and I can win and get paid.’ ’’

Damn, they are licking their lips, salivating all over Peppers. Back off our players Pats, draft your own damn stars, stop taking everyone else's.

I think assuming either way is foolish.

If anything the offer they made was insignificant and thus refused.

If it ever comes out, however, that they offered a 2nd or greater I will gladly light the torches for you all to burn the stadium to the ground.
