Smitty's interview on the Panthers offense

With all the criticism of Jake I never hear about Smith or other WR's running the wrong routes on key downs or interceptions and I've seen it all year.

Immediately after a game you might get a snippet about it but later in next week's pre-game hype it's all about pissy comments that leave a lot unsaid and take no personal responsibility for the lack of a passing game. Has anyone ever considered that Smitty having a down year may be partially on him?

I think most have. I think Smith has basically come to accept this year that Jake is done and Fox/Davidson can be a bigger problem than asset.

Smitty's play regardless of the bad throws.....has been off slightly this year. There have been rare windows where he isn't being the old Smitty......but you can't really blame him. It is probably tough to be mentally in every snap 100% given what Jake has done this year.....I think we have caught Smith several times not at 100%. I don't think that he is intentionally being slack though.

Some people just love to make excuses there for sure. But whatever. The QBs always get the blame, while the WR, TE, etc. that make mistakes themself too get a free pass.

Smitty is like most elite receivers. They are all prima donnas and all about themselves. He is no different. It goes with the territory for a wide receiver.

Sorry, but I don't agree.

Smith is like most athletes. He's a competitor who wants to play well not only for himself, but for his team. If DeAngelo wasn't getting any carries, I'm sure he would feel like he's not an asset on the team either (and he would be right).

Believe what I'm saying. I'm not as good as y'all. Two heads are better than one, baby. But I'll ride your coattail all the way.

What makes a "prima donna"? The QB that the coach keeps putting in the game no matter how shitty he plays, or the WR, or other players that keep their mouth shut and not throw teammates under the bus for fear of getting in trouble?

I'd rather have a player open his mouth and be truthful, than have a QB and coach that can't face reality.

A coach that could open his mouth and be truthful would be a TOTAL blessing.

When he takes shots at everyone else I sure as hell can hold him accountable. But it's our offense that is sick, not necessarily the players. When you see every wide receiver making the same stupid mistakes it is about preparation and that is coaching. I will say our WR blocking this year is about the best it's been and that is saying something. Smitty in particular has stepped up that side of his game and seems to get a lot of satisfaction on the field from it.

A team player is happy when we win no matter who is producing. A prima donna is the guy who is unhappy unless he is getting the ball. Truth is that teams scheme to take him out of the game, so he should be happy that he is making a contribution and changing the defense even if he isn't the star.

Prima donnas worry about their own production as much or more than they do the team's success. Even in wins, Smitty complains if he doesn't get the ball. The he makes a comment like he did in New England to the effect that when they need a biig play they will look to 89. Players secure in their ability don't have to toot their own horn.

If you have a Porsche, that you can't do over 50 MPH in, wouldn't you take it back to who is responsible to fix that problem?

Basically nothing get's fixed if you just sit on the issue and accept failure, and getting shitted on.

Steve Smith, and most of our offense is a carburetor that isn't getting feed enough fuel.

I'll also add that I rarely see primadonna receivers laying out the sort of blocks that Smith does in the running game.

No one said he wasn't trying or wasn't an elite player, I just think he has a huge ego that needs to be stroked. That is a prima donna in my book. I guess I am old school who believes the opportunity to play, the millions of dollars, resultant perks should be enough.

It amazes me you can complain about Steve and his ego, and defend Jake, Fox, and the org. as you do.

You contradict yourself on so many levels.

If I didn't like my role at work would I go to my boss and complain or would I write a letter to the editor at the local newspaper. In the letter would I intimate I don't like things at work but won't say anything because I will get in trouble. Then I go to work the next week and expect everything to be better.

That is what he did in the interview. Your example is way off base.

    • I'd like to see the gameday chats come back, especially if you can get it mobile compatible and like those support chats that stay on the screen even when you move around the site. We could use them during CLTFC and Hornets games now too.
    • There's a lot of truth here, but at the same time, that one year of production we might be paying for is actually paying for a development arc. And a lot of players have those. QB is the most complicated position in sports, hands down.  I'm not saying Bryce will make it past the hump this year, the odds are stacked against him just like any QB in the league that isn't already considered an elite player (and there are only about 5-8 of those at most). Arcs happen, and slow arcs happen, too. Sam Darnold seemed a wash up for the Jets and a horrible mistake. He was better with us, but still couldn't carry a bad team on his shoulders (or bad coaching). He went to Minnesota and got a shot under better coaching with more mature eyes to see the field. Something sparked and then he took his team to the Super Bowl and brought home a ring. Baker Mayfield had a similar arc, and may yet hit the big game. Hell, locally, Jake Delhomme had one. Or Bryce could flutter back down having already hit his peak. It happens. More often than any of us want to admit. We've paid for a full development arc for Bryce, but we've had it on rookie deal rates and that's been a savings that has let us build out the rest of the team, which was really needed. Maybe we end up diving back into the QB pool in the first round next season. Might be the guy, might not.  But he'll be set up with a better team that Bryce was when he started. Or maybe, just maybe, Bryce adds another seven TDs and loses four INTs on the season. Grabs three more wins and maybe a playoff win, maybe two. It's not completely impossible and that'd be great for the team and for him.  We're just going to have to tune in and see how it plays out. Probably won't be boring.
    • I am holding out hope for a miraculous run this season. But you know the narrative around him is peak delusional when the Panthers social team can post this without even a hint of irony. Four years and almost 50 games into his career he still looks like he's never set foot in the weight room. Really?
