Getting my son an xbox for Christmas. What do I need for him to play xbox live in his room? He doesn't have internet in there or phone.

A wireless adapter. Microsoft sells a wireless adapter for the Xbox 360, but it's about $100. But I think you can just plug in any old adapter and plug it in to the 360's USB port. Double check with the Geeks at Best Buy. If you don't have a wireless network set up, he's buggered.

I thought that was all we needed, but he's telling me we need another modem in his room. I'm so confused.

OK, so just get the xbox wireless thingy at walmart for $89 and he's good to go?

Yep, thats it. Check your router. If it is an "N" router get the "N" adapter - it is fastest and much better range ($99). If it is a "G" router get the "G" adapter its is cheaper ($59 or so).

How old is your son? Because you might want to set voice restrictions on it if he's not too old.

People on xbox live won't care if he's 5 or 35 they will cuss you out all the same.

Should be written somewhere on the router. Probably easiest to google the model number and it will tell you.

The Xbox arcade doesn't have enough memory to play online either. You will need a hard drive. So get a Elite for him.

Subscribe to xbox Live.

That's about it. Setup is pretty simple out of the box.

G should be sufficient for you. Get that working first. If you find the signal isn't strong enough later...you'll know you'll have to upgrade your wireless router. His G would probably still work fine, but then you could decide to upgrade to the xbox wireless N adapter. Not necessary...but it's an option.

And because you are getting into the next gen game a little late, like I was, Sony has announced that PS3 will have a shelf life of about 10 years. Meaning it will probably be relevant until 2016. Don't know how long Xbox 360 will be around. Plus he gets a home entertainment console.
