Just for fun - If you could rename the Panthers

I always thought Tennessee should have been the Copperheads. Have Copper colored helmets with whatever colors looked good with it. That would be my choice. Carolina Copperheads

When Tennessee began putting together there team for an official name the other two that were being considered were River Bandits and the Vipers was the other name considered. I am glad they went with Titans its a better name.

either way...is there an abundance of cougars/mountain lions/panthers in the Carolinas?

BLACK Panthers...no...but Mountain Lions (which are Cougars) & Coyotes yes... I've seen both up here around Boone.

Actually read an article about a month ago in the Observer about Coyotes in Charlotte suburbs...being driven out from places like Kings Mt, Crowder's Mt, and Hickory...

panthers/cougars are around one has been seen around iredell county. a couple friends of mine saw it crossing the road one evening. i don't think that they are migrating back this way, most likely the result of someone keeping one as a "pet" and then releasing it or letting it get away. there were some people i lived near in wilkesboro (actually millers creek) a few years back that had quite a few exotic big cats on their property...and we have coyotes in yadkin and surry county now that we didn't a few years ago so new species are moving in. the conditions are right for them to live here, i don't know why they wouldn't/couldn't make a comeback.

The "pet" theory is the best one and what many 'experts' point to if there were actually a handful of Cougars in the foothills/mountians. However, I have been out of college many years now and they could have been re-introduced to the area without my knowledge of it. In the late '90's there was a push by local biologists to re-introduce native species to the Carolinas that were extirpated. Wild turkey and coyotes were still here, they just had low population levels that rebounded nicely. Elk was re-introducted to Maggie Valley in the late '90's and DEFINITELY were extirpated for the Carolinas for hundreds of years.

Anyway, all joking names aside, Cougars would have been a cool name if Panthers didn't stick.

I know I saw one in Boone when I lived there.

    • Mel Kiper said he would retire if Jimmy Clausen wasn't a successful NFL starter too. Just because the experts make a claim doesnt mean it's true either.  Bryce may be a serviceable QB for someone. Serviceable QBs don't bring you a perennial winner or lead you to the playoffs over and over. Serviceable QBs also dont get 50m plus per year deals which is what a Bryce extension would look like.  The stats show he hasn't been even a serviceable QB in the 3 years he's been here. The eye test shows he hasn't put together 2 franchise QB salary games back to back in 3 years.  Complain all you want about people being negative, but people pointing out that Bryce is held to a different standard than anyone else on the team isn't complaining. It's stating the obvious.
    • We have big bodied WRs and 3 TEs who all have potential and each bring something different to the table. I never saw the need to go out there and try and find a new starting TE.  While it's nice to have a guy like McBride, Bowers, etc, I think a team's better use of the cap is by having TEs on rookie contracts or cheap vets, not having to pay elite TE money.
    • He had the award until like the last 8 games. He sucked ass and flagg had 3 40 point games
