Panthers focus on health of ‘Big Kemo’

I think you will see the panthers take a NT in the draft.for insurance

He has a $9.3 million option bonus due in early March which would extend his contract through 2014, but no one anticipated that ever being picked up. It was written into his deal last offseason to save some salary cap room. When that tab isn’t picked up (according to contract documents obtained by The Herald), he’ll be due a $1.7 million non-exercise bonus and a base salary of $2.6 million for next season, essentially what he’d have made before the restructuring.

If the rehab doesn’t go well, that $2.6 million’s a sizable savings they could realize by cutting him (the sunk $1.7 million would effectively be part of the cost of doing business with Peppers last year). With Leonard and Tyler returning, they have more depth there than ever before, but they’d still need a big run-stopper in the middle of the line.

While I think Kemo is a decent NT I also think he is not worth nearly what he is getting paid. He is and always has been a 1 dimensional run stopper. Those are not as hard to find as people think. Plenty of 3-4 NT that can't cut it would be perfect fits for that position in the 4-3.

I say cut him and draft Torrell Troup outta UCF in the 3rd-4th. He is a more rounded NT as he can collapse the pocket as well as take on mulitple blockers and stop the run. He's much younger, has more potential, and would be much much cheaper. Wins all the way around.

I agree.the panthers could use a 3tech but I dont think we will draft 2 DTs so we prob just will go with a NT.

I would cry tears of Joy if we got both Troup and Atkins. I think we need all the help we can get and they both should be around in the 4th round area. This is the most stack draft I can remember in the 2 positions we need the most help in WR and DT. I think it would be wise to maximize our chances of getting a stud by getting 2 of each. But thats just me.

    • Kalkbrenner and Sion James received regular contracts and not two ways, so the Hornets have some work to do to cut the roster size down.
    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
