DL as of Now?

My take on the current d-line depth chart:

LDE - (Charles) Johnson, (Eric) Moore

NT - Leonard - UTs rotate in on passing downs

UT - Tyler, Irvin, (Ed) Johnson, Hayden, Landri

RDE - Brown, Taylor

This d-line got Meeks-ish real quick. Leonard, Tyler and Irvin are the only ones over 300#. Smallish seems to be the way to go anyway, teams are in nickel (or a variant based toward pass def) more than 60% of the time. Kemo and Lewis don't fit if we're moving to a smaller, quicker d-line.

My opinion? Peppers notwithstanding, Brayton would be the biggest loss if we can't re-sign him. Versatile guy, good push at both DT and DE. He fits, and gives you options against run and pass oriented teams.

The thing that concerns me is the overall talent level. This group needs at least one more stud to be effective IMO, preferably two. Hayden, Landri and Moore are TC fodder or not quite adequate backups at best.

We'll get some guys back that were let go or try to replace them in FA if the find word elsewhere, but still... I was on the "WR is pri 1!!!11!!" bandwagon until today.

TC fodder? I hope that is a bit extreme. The players we have now (minus Irvin) played well before they got hurt. I would like to see us pick a DT in the draft but would rather the WR 1st.

Go Panthers

The 3 players I addressed as either tc fodder or less than marginal backups

Hayden - less than marginal, just a cheap warm body

Landri, Eric Moore - have you actually looked at the career stats for these guys?

I'll stand by that all day.

What I did say was the overall group talent leaves a bit to be desired, it needs one or two more players.

Thats almost half the Dline roster (Landri wont be on this team come November and I don't even know who this Eric Moore is). What do you want exactly? 300 lbs DEs? The only guy I see seeing significant playing time who is on the smaller side is Brown and he was getting pretty good pressure even as a rookie not playing much.

Its still early in the off-season. The 1st day of FA isn't even over and the draft hasn't been held. People are overreacting. Who cares what size the dline is, if this D is playing like it did at the end of the season. And lets not forget who still is HC. I see them coming to a comprimise. I wouldn't mind having some big bodies in the middle to stop the run and undersized speed rushers coming off the edge to get pressure on the QB.

    • He does have speed. 21+ top end speed is very fast for a linebacker and his 3 cone drill time is considered excellent, close to elite.
    • This is awesome because you get to see the perspectives of the scouts--get a glimpse behind the curtain. I wonder whose doing this was; I am curious as to why David Tepper allowed it. Maybe it was his wife. Maybe Dan.  At least from my perspective--and probably one shared by other fans--when David Tepper bought the team, he closed everything off too much to the fans, and really didn't give an explanation. Things were obviously done because he (and/or some others wanted to do it). Remember when they used the guise of construction and all that to keep fans from seeing the team during practice? I know there are laws and safety and all that, but Tepper could've made it happen. And, of course, we all know that they essentially fired Jeremy from his independent contractor gig as a photojournalist. I never understood why they'd do that (and the negative reverberations obviously affected Jeremy and ultimately this place--i.e, us fans). The pie was (and is) certainly big enough to throw some scraps to the independents. I realize that you can't necessarily open the floodgates, but a few different perspectives from indy journalists whether in word or photos is a good thing in my mind.  So, it's great to see different perspectives. I will say this however: it is not without risk, as you know there will be some buster who will be calling the scouts out if the players flop. I think we should all keep in mind that the buck stops with the GM. It's nice to have one, however, that is so convicted in his people and process--and ultimately success, that he's willing to give fans access to this type of information. Pass this on to Tepper.
    • I hope he ends up being our best ever at the position. Ryan Kalil left big shoes behind that we haven't quite been able to fill since.
