Steve Smith, Panthers – Is it too early to hail Matt Moore as the answer in Carolina? Sure, but his 104.9 QB passer rating in five starts last season suggests at the very least that he's not an unmitigated disaster under center. And that's all that matters when it comes to Smith.

From 2005-2008 Smith posted an incredible per-game average of 5.87 receptions, 93.65 yards, and 0.65 touchdowns with the pre-meltdown version of Jake Delhomme. Over that time period, his production only slipped in the 11 games started by the putrid troika of Chirs Weinke, David Carr, and the 44-year-old, off-the-couch version of Vinny Testaverde. In those 11 games, Smith plummeted to 4.8 receptions, 49.1 yards, and 0.18 touchdowns per game.

Our hero's production suffered again in 2009 with the fork-in-back version of Delhomme, limiting Smith to 4.18 receptions, 54.9, and 0.36 touchdowns. Now that looks a lot like the earlier damage done by the law firm of Weinke, Carr and Testaverde. But let's get down to the nitty-gritty. What are Smith's per-game averages in the seven starts he shared with a raw Matt Moore in 2007 and 2009? The line is almost identical to his 2005-2008 numbers: 5.86 receptions, 90.7 yards, and 0.57 touchdowns.

Though small sample size is an obvious caveat, Smith has consistently produced close to six receptions, 90-95 yards, and 0.6-0.75 touchdowns when he receives the bare minimum of competence from his quarterback. The early returns suggest Moore meets the bare minimum requirement.

      I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?

      LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.

      After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
