'Tis the season for unloading expensive veteran quarterbacks.

The Rams announced the release of quarterback Marc Bulger Monday, ending an eight-year run with the team that began brilliantly but fell apart the last three seasons.

Bulger was scheduled to make $8.5 million next season and was never expected to be with the team in Week One. We're trying to figure out why they dumped him now instead of one week ago or after the draft.

Why Bulger over Campbell? Because he's less likely to start? He surely hasn't looked any better than Campbell as of late.

He's older and he's not going to be seen as a possible "quarterback of the future". And he's fine as a backup, you're not going to be looking for elite quarterbacks to back up Matt Moore.

Bulger can be had a cheap price and we can lock him in for two seasons at that. Campbell has a tender and will cost draft picks.

Bulger may seem like Carr 2.0 but there is a difference. Bulger has the tools and prior success and was a victim of a crappy offensive system over the past few years.

You guys have to realize how epicly awful the Rams are as well. They're historically bad. For whatever reason, they don't get the "bad" hype as bad as the Raiders and Lions do, but they're significantly worse than both of those horrible teams.

There isn't a QB in the league that could have succeeded there. Not one. Now that's not to say that Bulger is good enough to be a regular starter, because he's probably not. But as a non-threatening, veteran backup quarterback? He fits the bill perfectly.

    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
    • I think the D performed well over the season considering it was put together with Scotch tape.
