Comparing Clausen's situation to previous rookie QB's....

I'm just going to do a run down of the different situations previous rookie/young QBs have been put in.

2001 QB's

Chris Weinke

We had a 12th ranked passing game, 29th ranked rushing game, 27th ranked defense, 7-9 record.

We all know what happened.

We gave him a 29th ranked rushing attack and a 31st ranked defense, we were 4th ranked in attempts!!!! Holy crap, no wonder 2001 was considered on of the worst in NFL history. 1-15 no playoffs.

2002 QB's

Patrick Ramsey

They were 8th ranked rushing, 30th ranked passing, with an 8-8 record.

They gave him a 13th ranked rushing attack, a 5th ranked defense, but they were 12th in attempts. 7-9 no playoffs.

Chad Hutchinson

They were 3rd ranked rushing, 31st passing, with a 5-11 record.

They gave him a 19th ranked rushing attack, a 18th ranked defense, and they were 28th in attempts. They tried to follow the foumula but just barely. 5-11 no playoffs.

David Carr

They didn't exist yet.

They gave him a 31st ranked rushing attack, 16th ranked defense and they 32nd in attempts. 2-14 no playoffs.

Joey Harrington

They were 28th rushing, 6th ranked passing, with a 2-14 record.

They gave him a 29th ranked rushing attack and 31st ranked defense, 9th in attempts. Polar opposite on the plan. 3-13 no playoffs.

2003 QB's

Byron Leftwich

They were 10th ranked rushing, 28th passing, and a 20th ranked defense. 6-10 record.

They gave him a 8th ranked rushing attack, a 6th ranked defense and they were 17th in attempts. 5-11 which really busts the trend, they had too many attempts but the run game and D should have made up for it.

Kyle Boller

They were 16th ranked rushing, 27th passing, and a 22nd ranked defense. 7-9 record.

They gave him a 1st ranked rushing attack, a 3rd ranked defense, and they were 32nd in attempts. 10-6 division champs, playoffs.

2004 QB's

Ben Roethlisberger

They were 31st in rushing, 14th passing, with a 9th ranked defense. 6-10 record.

They gave him a 2nd ranked running game and 1st ranked defense, 32nd in attempts!!!!! 15-1 AFC championship game.

2005 QB's

Kyle Orton

They were 25th in rushing, 32nd in passing, and 21st in defense. 5-11 record.

They gave him a 9th ranked rushing attack and 2nd ranked defense, 30th in attempts. 11-5 playoffs.

2006 QB's

Matt Leinart

They were 1st in passing, 32nd rushing, with a 8th ranked defense. 5-11 record.

They gave him a 30th ranked running game, 29th ranked defense, 7th in attempst. 5-11 no playoffs.

Vince Young

They were 9th in passing, 23rd rushing, with a 19th ranked defense. 4-12 record.

They gave him a 5th ranked running game 32nd ranked defense, 28th in attempts. 8-8 no playoffs.

Bruce Gradkowski

They were 25th in passing, 14th rushing, with a 1st ranked defense. 11-5 record with playoffs.

They gave him a 28th ranked run game, a 17th ranked defense, they were 11th in attempts. 4-12 no playoffs.

2007 QB's

Trent Edwards

They were 18th in defense, 28th in passing, and 27th in rushing. 7-9 no playoffs.

They gave him a 15th ranked running game and 31st ranked defense, they were 30th in attempts. 7-9 no playoffs.

2008 QB's

Matt Ryan

The Falcons were 26th rushing, 18th passing, 29th total defense in 2007. They went 4-12.

Looked pretty grim for Ryan but they made some changes in 08 to get him some help.

They gave him a 2nd ranked rushing attack. Improved the D just a little bit. They were 29th in passing attempts. They go 11-5, playoffs.

Joe Flacco

Things didn't look too good for Flacco either, a 5-11 ball club, 23rd passing, 16th rushing. However, they did have a 6th ranked defense.

The ravens made soem adjustments for their QB.

2008 4th ranked rushing attack, They were 30th in passing attempts. They go 11-5, AFC championship game.

*Note* The panthers were 32nd in passing attempts in 2008.

2009 QB's

Josh Freeman

2008 15th in rushing, 11th in passing, with a 9th ranked defense. They go 9-7.

Seems like a good situation for Freeman, except the Bucs go into rebuilding mode.

In 2009 they give him a 23rd ranked run game and 27th ranked defense, they are 22nd in passing attempts, 3-13.

Mark Sanchez

2008 They are 16th passing, 9th rushing, 16th ranked defense.

Looks pretty good for Mark Sanchez, a decent team trades way up to get him, lucky him.

In 2009 they give him a 1st ranked run game and 1st ranked defense, they are 32nd in passing attempts!!!!!! Doesn't get much better than that. AFC championship game with a 9-7 record.

Matthew Stafford

2008 they are 30th in rushing, 24th passing(because they get blown out so much), 32nd ranked defense. 0-16, worst record ever.

It's going to take a while.

2009 they give him a 24th ranked run game and a 32nd ranked defense, they are 21st in passing attempts. 2-14, at least they improved.

2010 QB's

The Golden Calf of Bristol

2009 Broncos are 18th rushing, 13th passing, 7th ranked defense, 8-8.

Sam Bradford

2009 Rams are 20th rushing, 28th passing, 29th ranked defense, 1-15.

Colt McCoy

2009 Browns are 8th rushing, 32nd passing, 31st ranked defense, 5-11.

Jimmy Clausen

2009 Panthers are 3rd rushing, 27th passing, 8th ranked defense, 8-8.

So Clausen and The Golden Calf of Bristol all are in the formula to succeed. McCoy is going to need his defense to step up. Bradford is going to need everything to go right just to be competitive.

Clausen has the better chance than The Golden Calf of Bristol because of the run game. Defense and previous record are very similar.

Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, Kyle Orton, Matt Ryan, Joe, Flacco, and Mark Sanchez.

These are all guys that have either successful careers, had a really successful rookie season, and/or are considered good QBs.

In their rookie seasons they all followed the forumla of good D, good running game, and throw the ball as little as you can.

Are the Panthers a team that can satisfy these requirements?

I think so.

Fox will start Moore

Fox has to win this season and Moore knows the system now.

Clausen has camp and a few games to learn the system and his WR's.

But Fox will not hesitate on a change if and when needed.

He likes his job !

 Why in the hell is every thinking just because Jimmy was Carolina first pick of the draft he is automaticlly going to start are battle for starting postion. Jimmy Clasun was the best player on the board at time. Most draft experts was predicting Clasun to go in the top 10 are in the first round. But he didn't because every team on the board had a start QB right now. So he fell to the panthers. Big deal. Any moron would know having a chance at a QB that should of gone in the first would but didn't should be picked up if there. This doesn't mean fox is going to give him a chance at starting spot unless Moore does a Derek Anderson on use. Which I doubt he will. So I'm safe to say Clasun will be on the bench for year to come unless Moore longer can not get the Job done. So place stop with all the talk about Moore starting Job is already Clasun with no fight. The keys to the offense is Moore until he can no longer produce. That want happen just like that. Moore has proven that he is to good in the games he has played. Please don't pull up that it was just a fluke BS theme. Nothing was fluke. Moore is a diamond in the rough type find for carolina. He is going to do the job and nothhing else matter. Jimmy was just there in the right place at the right time when it came to the panthers pick. Just pure luck. If jimmy was never pick. We would not be assumming nothing about the battle for the starting QB spot. Moore is start and Jimmy is backup until further notice.:skep:

Original OP's post was well thought out, well articulated, and very informative.

Yours....not so much.

When you say we were ranked 4th in attempts, what attempts are you talking about?

We gave him a 29th ranked rushing attack and a 31st ranked defense, we were 4th ranked in attempts!!!! Holy crap, no wonder 2011 was considered on of the worst in NFL history. 1-15 no playoffs.

I don't foresee that happening.

The biggest difference from a lot of those guys is that Claussen is coming in with a young QB with a high upside sitting in the starting posistion already. Whoever wins out in that battle, it'll be because they are the best guy for the job, and the team will be better for it.

Moore has a "high upside"? then why was he undrafted? it can't be but so high. sure, he's looked good in a handfull of games but his ceiling isn't nearly as high as highly touted #2 ranked, franchise quarterback.

moore is a good QB. clausen, given the same game experience, 8 starts, will be far superior to moore when it's all said and done.

i do however hope moore can hold up to a full season. he's already sit out due to injury in the past and has barely played a half season much less a full one.
