I never post but need to say some things about the team

Hey Guys,

As the title indicates I rarely post on this board, although I've loved reading it for years and have been a Carolina fan since the day Jake Delhomme took over for Peete. I grew up in Asheville but have lived in Seattle since 2000 (god, 05 NFC Champ sucked!) I'm also a professional NFL handicapper and I advise people of who to bet on each and every week for a small cost.

I've been reading a lot of opinions about the team and felt the time had finally come for me to put in my 2 cents.

I believe there is much to be optimistic about this season, for me what sums up our 8-8 season and our playoff collapse in '08 is Jake Delhomme, its obvious to me that Jake was never the same after the surgery although I had hoped that wouldn't be the case. I'm a fan because I loved the chemistry and identity of the team with Fox, Jake, smith etc.. over this past era.

Carolina is a pretty complete team with good decision makers and coaching staff, we haven't had back to back winning seasons but are still a much better organization than a lot of teams. It's understandable that the team was loyal to Jake last year prior to injury, but It was my opinion as soon as the season that the Panthers would cut ties with Delhomme as it was pretty clear he could no longer do what was expected, and that they would continue with Moore as well as drafting a QB (which I hoped would be Jimmy but didn't think he would fall to us)

I know I was so excited to see Matt Moore play the way he did with the team the last games of last season. The thing that was apparent to me was that we were spreading the ball around a lot more, and also it seemed Moore was hooking up with S. Smith on a deep TD nearly every game, something that had been sorely missing. I firmly believe had we started with Moore at the start of the year we would have won 10+ games.

I was very glad to see trgo leave and meeks hired, most D coordinators really shine in there 2nd year, I would say that his 1st year here exceeded expecations, It was nice to see the Panthers getting a lot of takeaways, which had been missing. Run D suffered but losing Kemo so close to the start of the year hurt us there, I believe pass D will be just as good this year and Run D will improve its just a matter of how much. I'm not even gonna elaborate on our running game as everyone knows its one of the best in NFL history thus far.

I'm excited to have a fresh season where Moore will start from Day 1 most likely, and its safe to assume the players are behind him and have confidence in his ability to lead them to wins, its also nice we have another guy behind him to groom or to sub in for injury etc... I've seen alot of people claim this to be a rebuilding year. After examining the current state of the team, and also the favorable schedule and our prior history, I think fans can expect 10+ wins and at least a wild card berth this year.

Lastly, a lot of fans are in doom and gloom mood because of Peppers leaving, while he's a great player no doubt I believe some of our other guys will now have the breathing room to step up in that role in his absence. I'm very confindent we will have a top 10 running game, passing game, run D, pass D.... this year. To me the only wild card in this whole thing is how well our O line and D line will play this year. O line should be strong, and D line is a little more of a question but even if they don't improve at all, it must be remembered we won 8 games last year with the toughest schedule in the NFC, and this year its more favorable and we will start the year with a much more efficient QB.

Nice write up, and welcome to (posting on) the forum.

I think you'll find a lot of guys who are as optimistic as you are. I'm among them. I do worry about our run defense next year, but our strengths -- running the ball, good pass defense -- should make up for it.

I also agree that, had we started Moore last year, we would have won at least 10 games.

Not to be a negative Nancy, but....

We will not have a top 10 run and pass D and O. Way to much to ask if you ask me.

Most likely we will have a top 5 run O, and top 10 pass D. But that is where it stops.

This is not a playoff team, and that's not saying that the sky is falling, nor that I am upset about it, but we do have some issues that will keep us from making a good run.

Fuzz you have really turned into a negative Nancy :(

I know, it's really not like me.

Personally I love what is going on this offseason, but I don't think that it amounts to a playoff year this year.

There are just a few questions that I have that I can't seem to shake. I guess I could start a thread and list them, and let some of you crack at them...

fuzz has always been hard on Hurney, but I do like what he is doing here right now...so there is some positive from theNancy.

I just do not believe you can say that definitively. The truth is the team has the potential to be a top team in the NFC this season, at the same time the team does has potential to finish under 500.

I just think it comes down too all of our young players and how they step up across the board. We have seen flashes of some of them, but now they will have to perform on a consistent basis. I just think there are too many new pieces to say the team can not achieve this season. There are a lot of question-marks....But this team has plenty of talent with a high ceiling.

Definitively, no. What I can say, is that I will be absolutely shocked, and delighted if we have a top 10 Run D, Pass D, Run O and Pass O.

Do we have some talent? Absolutely. Do we have the talent across the board to be in front of 21 teams at the least in 4 of the 5 major categories in the NFL? Hell no.

We most likely will not be in the top 10 in Pass O, nor Run D. Sorry dude.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
