Tom Izzo is meeting w/ Cavs today; close to taking the job!

Tom Izzo is apparently closer to saying yes to the Cleveland Cavaliers than previously thought, a source told ESPN.com's Andy Katz on Thursday.

That source discussed Izzo's future with a close confidant of Izzo, who is coaching in the NBA. The source told Katz that Izzo, who talked to his team earlier this week about his interest in the Cavaliers, is leaning toward taking the job if it is offered.

"Three weeks ago that wasn't the case, but it has changed,'' said the source.

Izzo is meeting with Cleveland to discuss the team's coaching vacancy on Thursday.

"Coach Izzo made me aware he is meeting with Cleveland," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said in a statement. "The details of any meetings are between him and me."

A source within the Cavaliers organization told The Associated Press that Izzo will be in Cleveland to meet with the Cavs and tour their facilities.

Izzo isn't the only coach interested in the Cavaliers' job, which may or may not include the chance to coach free agent LeBron James. Wednesday night, an NBA Eastern Conference executive with knowledge of the Cavaliers' thinking told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that Byron Scott is a strong candidate to be offered the job instead of Izzo.

The executive told Broussard that Scott is on equal footing with Izzo.

Scott, the former Los Angeles Lakers' guard who has coached the New Jersey Nets and the New Orleans Hornets, has spoken with members of the Cavaliers' front office the past few days, and late Wednesday night the talks took on a more serious nature, the source told Broussard. Scott is expected to have a formal interview with the team before the end of this weekend.

Izzo, meanwhile, said recently that he wouldn't leave Michigan State until the school won another national championship. But that feeling has apparently changed. He met with his players on Tuesday, according to Spartans associate head coach Mark Montgomery, updating them on Izzo's interest in the Cavs job. He did not give any indication of whether he would take the job, but a source told Katz that Izzo told the team he has a lot of thinking to do about taking the position.

A member of the Michigan State Board of Trustees said earlier this week that Izzo has already turned down an offer from the Chicago Bulls this offseason. A source within the Bulls' organization denied that to ESPNChicago.com's Nick Friedell, though the source did say that Izzo and the Bulls had talked.

Cleveland is looking to replace Mike Brown, who was fired after the Cavaliers lost to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Izzo's making a big mistake, even if Lebron decides to stay with the Cavs. Most college coaches dont do well when they make the jump to the NBA. He's one of the best college coaches there is out there. Go back to Michigan State, and win another national championship.

But then again, if he does leave and screw up in the NBA, he can always go back to the college level and pick up a job pretty quick.

No

IMO he is the best coach in College right now. They are going to be filthy good this year. Why leave that.

Yeah he is better than Coach K. lol

No he shouldn't go unless Lebron is staying there. Otherwise he will fail like the rest of them.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
