Ramon Sessions.... and other trade talk

Charlotte still needs a point guard and, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking, has expressed interest in Minnesota's Ramon Sessions.

So the Mavericks ultimately elected to part with Dampier's contract in this deal because the Bobcats were willing to reacquire Carroll, which removes $11.7 million in salary over the next three seasons from a contract Carroll originally signed with Charlotte in the summer of 2006.

One source close to the situation said that the Bobcats will consider keeping Dampier for the short term, instead of waiving him immediately, in case another trade opportunity presents itself.......

But if the Bobcats elect not to trade Dampier, they can release him at any point before the season and instantly wipe $13 million off next season's payroll. One source close to the situation said Tuesday that Dampier is unlikely to re-sign with the Mavericks, as one believed, in the event that he is waived by Charlotte or another team.

"You have to consider that contract is probably one of the most valuable contracts in the league," Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins said. "The flexibility is the beautiful part of having Erick's deal, maybe not so much for Erick himself as a player, but for the franchise itself."

But sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that Charlotte withdrew from that trade largely for two reasons: Calderon has a 10 percent trade bonus in his contract (which has nearly $30 million remaining over the next three seasons) and Bobcats coach Larry Brown was not in favor of the deal.

While Higgins insisted the deal wasn't agreed upon, the Raptors seemed to think it was. Chandler wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Monday night that his agent had told him the deal was done, while Evans thanked Raptors fans on his Twitter page.

"We could not be more excited to add Tyson Chandler," Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said in a statement. "He is one of the most versatile big men in the league today. He gives our front line a defensive, shot-blocking, athletic punch we haven't had here in a while."

Ajinca joins the newly signed Ian Mahinmi on the Mavericks' list of project big men, while Charlotte prepares to either realize an instant savings of $13 million or offer around Dampier's contract to help find a point guard to replace New York Knicks signee Raymond Felton.

Here's Sessions' career line per 36min: 14.8pts 6.9ast 1.3 stl 2.7tov

At first glance, he seems to be the kind of guy Larry Brown could work with: a young guard that needs to improve his ball handling some, but has already shown a knack as a facilitator. His numbers did drop some last year, but that could be chocked up to him getting less playing time than in previous years. He's not the kind of guy that you'd trade Dampier (or to be more exact, Dampier's unguaranteed contract) for, but at the very worst he'd be a lateral move from Felton. I'd be all for acquiring him.

He is a downgrade from Felton and I thought Felton was an average starter at best.

The stats show otherwise. His PER in the only year he got considerable minutes was almost 18, higher than anything Felton has ever done. His per 36min are right in line with what Felton has done, and Sessions is a higher percentage shooter than Ray. Felton might be a better defender, but Sessions is a better offensive player when given the chance to be.

Will have to disagree. Sessions cannot shoot the 3 ball at all (not that Felton was all that good at it), he isn't a great defender, and he couldn't crack the starting lineup in Minnesota over a rookie midget PG.

Yeah but Sessions once told his cousin's uncle's mother that he thought of attended Duke, so we could claim him as a Dookie and that would gives us 3 of them.........hip hip hooray :P:D

I would agree with this and I think Livingston has some serious issues (e.g. his knees). Sessions is not an upgrade over DJ. I would rather let Larry Hughes run the point all year.

Whoa there, lets not get to carried away. Ramon Sessions can still play ball. Now he is not a starter but he is a quality back up. He had a good game against the Cats this year where he dropped 13 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and only 2 turnovers in 26 minutes of play.

Sessions also recorded a double-double this year. Now I know he is not spectacular but he can distribute, rebound, and score. He hit double figures in points 31 times last season. He recorded 5 assists or more 21 times last season. Finally, he recorded 5 rebounds or more 10 times this year.

The Cats could trade Matt Carroll for Ramon Sessions straight up. This move would save money and give the Bobcats a pretty good point guard corp.

I could see it...

1. Shaun Livingston

2. Ramon Sessions

3. D.J. Augustin

That isn't to bad.

Sessions wasn't good, nor white enough, to play at Duke. He never received any such offer.

    • Dave in a presser gassed up Anthony Tyus III and dying to see him on the field.  I mean 3 is all that needed right, and Dan loves etienne. He's one year filling in his body. If brooks is back, toss in chubba, thats 3.
    • After seeing hits in the last two UDFA pools, I do not in this group sorta of a let down after I gassed myself up.  Not like I know of their games, but just expected more. The duke DT only has to beat out hunte (2025 UDFA) or Ray (DL coach's kid) or even Cam Jackson mid 2025 5th.  I thought they would bring in more edges, IOL, TEs, etc...
    • My 2 favorite picks, since you didn't ask? 3. Brazzell II.  A 1000 yard WR with 4.37 speed and checks all the boxes for a Z Wide Receiver.  IN THE THIRD ROUND!!! 5.  Sam Hecht.  I think he will take over as the starter at some point this season and never look back.  IN THE FIFTH ROUND. Runner Up:  2. Hunter:  We were targeting a DT early in this draft because we did very little to replace Robinson in free agency.  Hunter was our guy and he will start. In addition to that, you got a starting tackle that should man one side of the new OL we will build for Bryce's second contract. A starting WR, offensive lineman, defensive lineman and possible Offensive tackle (at some point during this year from this draft will start.  UNREAL. In addition, I don't doubt that Wheatley (5th round) takes the FS job by next year and Lee III is Jackson's replacement in 2027.   Finally, even Kuwatch should be a special teams demon and LB depth.   Last year's draft was so good it was ugly.  This one will turn out to be uglier.  No offense Basbear--this ain't about you.
