CAn the Panthers Win with This Receiving group?

Recommended Posts

Taking a look at the Receiver group of the Panthers I noticed 2 big things. First thing is they are very young and inexpirenced besides Steve Smith. Second thing I noticed is the drop off of talent after Smith.

So questions arises, can the Panthers win with this receiving corp?

Do the receivers have enough talent to keep teams honest?

We can win with no recievers besides Smith but it will handicap us come January.

We have a good balanced WR corp right now.

Smitty - everything man

LaFell - good run blocker

Edwards - Slot reciever, maybe some wildcat, trick play flexibility

Jarrett - .......he has good hands:biggrin:

Wright - ST with recieving ability

Gettis - Will need to beat out Jarrett to make the team which might not be too hard.

So I think we can win even against the powerhouse teams right now. Smith just needs not to be double teamed to be effective. If our 3rd rounders can step up look out.

The giants were very effective last season with the "other" Steve smith and two rookies...Nicks and manningham. So yes, we can win and we can an highly effective offense. Our problem or potential problem will stem from how the defensive line plays...and whether or not they can produce.

Agreed. The passing game should be fine with reliable QB play and the running game to take pressure off. The biggest question related to our success this season is "Can the Panthers win with this defensive line?"

The Panthers can win with this DL. However it hinges on the offense and these young WR's.

If the offense is ineffective in converting 3rd downs then the DL is going to wear out and start making mental mistakes because they are young. If the D has to stay on the field all day like it had to at times last year then this DL will never make it.

If the offense can keep a possesion moving and convert some 3rd's into 1st and 10 then we could be alright with this DL. A lot of this will hinge on the young WR's. We will probably do a good bit of running on 1st and 2nd, probably a good bit on 3rd down too. But there are going to be some 3rd and 8's that we will rely on these young WR's.

It is important that they make these catches. The biggest problem with Keary and Colbert was that you could not rely on them whatsoever on 3rd down. When you weren't expecting it they would make a great grab but when you needed it they would drop it 9 times out of 10.

We NEED these young guys not to do that.

If they don't and the O can stay on the field, I think that the DL will be fine.

THE OP must not be a Panthers fan. Otherwise he would know that we haven't really had anyone but Smith since Moose left after 2004. By the time he came back he has lost a step or two. We have a long history of receiver busts. We drafted so many this year because we knew that out of the 10 receivers not named Steve Smith in camp, we will be working hard to find two or three who can actually contribute.

    • Nobody is giving up a 4th rounder for a backup QB And anyone who needs a starter badly enough to where Bryce would then be their starter, is such a bad team that they're not giving up a pick likely to be about pick 105ish overall, instead of just dealing with a bad QB situation for a season and then drafting one in a loaded QB draft next year. I'm looking through all the teams right now and can't think of a single one that would be willing to part with anything better than a 6th rounder. Barring injuries (and excluding the Panthers), there look to be 10 teams who don't know with 100% certainty who their starting QB will be in 2027... Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Vikings, Colts, Saints, Falcons, Cardinals, and Rams. Of those 10...  The Rams know it will be Stafford or Simpson.  The Saints more than likely will be sticking with Shough unless he takes a huge step backwards.  So neither are giving up any draft picks for Bryce right now, just wouldn't make sense for either. Down to 8 Given their current QB situation of having multiple QBs they already need to evaluate between this year, the Browns (Shedeur/Watson), Vikings (Kyler/JJ), Colts (Jones/Richardson/Leonard), and Falcons (Penix/Tua), wouldn't be giving up a 4th (or maybe any pick) to bring in another QB to muddy the waters even more. Down to 4 Dolphins just signed Willis and wouldn't want to bring in another small Alabama QB who has struggled after just dumping Tua instead of just rolling with Ewers as the backup.   That then leaves the Steelers, Cardinals, and Jets left as it's clear none of them have any idea who their 2027 could be as of right now.  But the Steelers would for sure rather just see what one of the 2 QB's they drafted in the last 2 drafts could become than give up a mid round pick for Bryce.  Same goes for the Cardinals in taking Beck this past weekend. The Jets would be the most likely team to even consider taking him on, but I think it seems very apparent right now given them rolling with Geno and now talk of bringing in Wilson to be his backup, they're punting on QB this year to draft someone next year, so why give up even a mid round pick for Bryce?
    • Honestly I am not sure Pickett couldn’t step in for him. But I don’t see a clear easy upgrade and we are not KC with Alex Smith we are a team that hadn’t done poo for almost ten years and just made the playoffs. And looked good in the game. That stadium atmosphere on that day…. you know Tepper ate that poo up. Not one drink has been thrown in a while.  You had better make sure if you replaced him after that that you had a sure fire upgrade.
    • Makes sense. If Bryce is ass this year, we are probably drafting our new QB next draft and sitting him behind Bryce for a year
