Festivities at Gibbs Stadium include live band, TopCats, local food

It’s time to get “Back to Football” with the Carolina Panthers as Wofford College, the City of Spartanburg and Team Spartanburg Sports Council host a celebration of the team’s return on Saturday, July 31, at Gibbs Stadium. Festivities will be held on the stadium plaza and surrounding areas from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., then resume following the team’s 6:30 p.m. practice in the stadium.

The NFL team returns to Wofford for its 16th summer training camp, with the opening practice set for 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 29. The Panthers will be in Spartanburg until Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The “Back to Football” Party will feature live performances by popular regional band Back 9 and appearances by the TopCat cheerleaders and Panthers mascot Sir Purr. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at a “Taste of Spartanburg” food court featuring foods from local restaurants. There will be giveaways and other activities as well.

In addition, the Panthers Junior Training Camp for youngsters will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Wofford intramural field, between Cumming and Twitty streets below the main Gibbs Stadium parking lot.

Here are some other activities and programs at training camp this year:

The popular Panther Pals program, returning for its seventh year, will be expanded to nearly every day of practice this year. Panther Pals offers children between the ages of 6 and 13 an opportunity to watch part of practice from field level and then spend time with a player afterward. Kids can register to be a Panther Pal at the welcome tent located outside the entrance to the practice fields. Five names will be randomly chosen about 30 minutes before the end of practice. The children selected will receive a Panther Pal T-shirt and will be escorted to a special area to watch the conclusion of practice, then be matched with a player following practice. Registration begins approximately 30 minutes before the practice session begins. Children must be present when the names are called. (I run this program, so if you have questions, just post them or message me.)

Monday Night at the Movies are scheduled following the 6:30 p.m. practices on Aug. 2 and 9. Fans are invited to stay on the hill after the evening practice concludes and watch a football-themed movie on the big screen under the stars. See “Radio” on Aug. 2 and “The Blind Side” on Aug. 9. Popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase, but admission is free. “Radio” is based on the story of T.L. Hanna High School (Anderson, S.C.) football coach Harold Jones and James “Radio” Kennedy, who will be in attendance for a meet and greet prior to the showing of the movie. “The Blind Side” is about Baltimore Ravens tackle Michael Oher, who was a high school and college teammate of Panthers rookie defensive end Greg Hardy.

On T-Shirt Tuesdays – Aug. 10 and 17 following the 3 p.m. practices – Panthers players will toss T-shirts into the crowd along the autograph zone.

Family Fun Days will be held on Sunday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 15, at the 3 p.m. practices. Fans can enjoy the Kids Combine, Military Experience and more activities for the whole family. The Kids Combine promotes the NFL’s Play 60 youth fitness initiative through a variety of interactive football drills. The South Carolina National Guard will help fans experience the military with hands-on displays.

Be sure to bring your sunscreen because it is really hot down there.

insect repellent too. The far side of the field, where you can also watch, is woods and it the mosquitoes love human skin to feast on.

That's true. That's the best location, really, for viewing (if they stay true-to-form). There definitely are loads of mosquitoes over there.

Remember, you can bring a bottle of water, but no coolers (and no alcohol) are allowed inside the viewing area. No pets or video cameras, either.

Ugh, still have yet to attend a training camp. Would love to get down there for a week or two but my dad can't get work off. Would be nice to spend some time with him before I go back to school and he has always loved the Carolinas.

Any places I could stay for the week at an affordable cost? I would be content staying at a cheap motel and walking to camp each day and posting up. I've been die hard since 95 and have only seen them play live once.

Also, would be sick if we could get a huddle party going on as well. I would love to meet some of you guys, just look for the Mainer who is near death in your heat.

    • And once again I showed you it’s been pretty even. We spent 2nd and 3rd rounders this past draft on edge rushers. No one’s going to sit here and do the math on a draft value chart etc. the only reason I even entertained this was because you said we’ve spent nothing on defense when that simply isn’t true. It also didn’t help we traded our ONLY WR worth a damn to trade up for Bryce soo… And this is kind of the issue with the anti Bryce crowd. This crowd tends to blame him for the trade up. I was team Stroud. Had the panthers not taken Young the only other QB they were going to take was Richardson. So your issue should be with Tepper, Morgan, Fitterer not Bryce.  Bryce is who he is and it was pretty obvious who he was during the draft process. Bryce is slowly developing into that guy most thought he’d be. Give him a WR like Jamo and this offense as a whole would improve greatly.  Anyone thinking he was the next Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen is clearly slow. Bryce was always going to need pieces around him much like EVERY other QB Burrow has Chase and Higgins and they’ve done nothing. After losing in AFC Championship in 2022, Burrow is 17-15. QB’s need a team around them It’s why a Jalen Hurts led Eagles team dismantled a Pat Mahomes led KC team in the SB Imo the QB’s doing the most with the least up until this year have been Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson  This year it’s Drake Maye and Josh Allen  Outside of the 3-5 elite type QB’s I’m not really sure what people expect here. Is Bryce ever going to be in that elite category? Nope. Should we punt on Bryce and keep swinging? I don’t think so. Should we keep swinging while hanging onto Bryce? Yeah but I don’t know what that looks like This team as a whole isn’t very good. Offense and defense and that’s the simple truth
    • I didn't move the goal posts. But anyone who follows football who wants to engage in a rational discussion can't argue that 10 7th round picks are equal to 10 1st rounders in value. The argument has always been we haven't spent as much on defense has we have on offense. Draft picks have value just like salary. We have not spent the same amount of draft pick salary cap on defense that we have on offense since drafting Bryce. It's not even close. Just the 2 1sts we used on Bryce, 2 overall 1sts have a value of 6000. That doesn’t even factor in DJ Moore or the 2 2nds. Bryce cost more than everything we've spent on defense in 6 damn years.
    • We need to hope this scenario plays our next week he fails with pressure…what that means with Evero, is beyond me
