Today's office debate: Best American band RIGHT NOW

Crixtala and mmmbeans had some good answers. My Morning Jacket, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, all top 10 as far as American bands go.

most of the names in this thread are just popular bands with no originality or musical value. you can't just use "best" as "most popular" unless you wanna say that Fox News is the best network. lol.

if you think RHCP are the best American band then you hate music.

in my opinion, you have to look at what a band added to music, not what they take from it. sure, Kings of Leon is popular. but do you think they are influencing anything? no, they're just a rock band. they're the sum of their own influences. in 20 years nobody will know who they are.

you'll be hard pressed to find a more original, influential, and long lasting American band than The Flaming Lips. they've been putting out records for 30 years and will be in the list of influences for every creative band of the past few decades.

Unfortunately for old KoL fans, Only By the Night ruined them as a band. 90% of that album is radio pop songs. Their old stuff, namely from Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak is really, really great music.

I still say

is one of the best songs of the past decade. And Bob Dylan agrees with me.

you just wanted to show off that you can type π.

/mine's an ugly π.

I'm showing off the fact that I know that the character map pi.GIF is ugly and that I care enough to host an image of a pretty one.

:lurk5:

I think its pretty silly to use words like Best in association with any art forms. Best for who? Is it possible there is one band that is the best for the entire public?

Whats the best painting? Whats the best sculpture? Questions with no real answer.

This

Based on what? Ticket sales? Record sales? Awards won? Which genre?

A matter of opinion.

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
