Is this REALLY reading a book?

Listening to a book on CD. Is it the same thing as reading it?

    • Listening to a book is as good as reading it.

    • No way, you have to read it for yourself.

I'm talking to a woman and she tells me that she reads a book a week. I was impressed. I average about a book a month. (Sometimes more, sometimes less.)

Then she tells me that it's really easy to read at least a book a month. She just listens to them to and from work in her car.

Is that REALLY reading if all you do is listen to someone read to you? What are we kids having our parents read us a bedtime story?

I didn't want to get into an argument, but the more I thought about it, the more I came to the conclusion, that's not really reading a book

I'll put it to you all, is that really "reading" a book?

I wouldn't say it's the same, especially if your driving. The distractions when your listening vs. reading, when all your attention is focused on the text, more or less ensures that you won't get as much from the book IMO. It will be much less memorable and many of the themes and symbols will probably go over your head.

It's a proven fact that visually reading something and hearing the same thing read to you give different levels of memory retention. Reading it with your own eyes imprints it into your memory on a higher level than hearing it.

It isn't the same because the slightest distraction will ruin my ability to retain anything said by the reader. I wouldn't discount it, and it is better than not reading at all but there is definitely something to be said for actually reading it as opposed to anything else. Even if it's just while you take a crap everyone should be reading some book.

    • As much as I would love to sit here and bash on Young.  I can't.   He is absolutely a part of this team winning.  He is the cool hand leading the offense along with the hammer, Rico.  He's making plays on 3rd and 4th downs, that are absolutely helping thus team win.  Is Bryce playing as well as we'd like? Nope. Although he had only 1 week off from a high ankle sprain.   No question he was 100% in the Greenbay game.  I'm not even sure where the team would find a clear upgrade over Byrce.  He is a leader.  In the 4th quarter, he has ice in his veins.  He is a part of why our team is enjoyable to watch again.  Without him, we wouldn't be winning.    Anyways.  Y'all enjoy yet another thread designed to tear down the man.
    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
