Setting Realistic Expectations: Panthers 2010 & solving the riddle: 2013.(LONG)

Good post! I agree with almost everything you've put down (read my Panther's prediction sig).

However, I don't agree with JR's handling of the club for 2010.

There was no cap. Even if there is a lockout, one or two year contracts could have, and have been in other teams, been offered if the FO was willing to pay the dough. While true JR might be setting us up for future success in 2011 (or 12 if there is a lockout), I believe he still could have done it and not sacrificed 2010. The moves this year reek of banking the payroll instead of dishing it out.

I think it's gonna bite him in the ass when he fails to sell out his first game in a LONG time.

Yes it's true that he could have signed one year contracts. But we still had no QB and we needed to spend a lot of money to get a great one for more than one year. What if players that were good refused just one year contract?

Or maybe we fans would fall in love with some of these players. New staff would have to make room for them though they may not fit their model.

Could have Richardson done it? Sure. Is he also preparing for a possible lockout, saving money just like players are? Sure. Could it also be a good thing for the team? Yeah, I think it could.

That issue is kind of a 50-50 I think.

It doesn't bother him at all, not one bit.

Losing 100 ticket sales at $30 a piece isn't a decimal point compared to TV revenue.

But its even less material that the amount of money JR stands to make out a lockout. He is giving himself a really big raise soon. And that raise can be in 2012 because he is getting paid in 2011 whether we play or not

I'm pretty sure if they don't sell out, and the game is blacked out... some of that TV revenue is lost as well.

I'm not going to go into nearly as much detail as you but I will tell you were you are right and wrong in a timely fashion.

Peppers wanted out because he blamed Fox and Turdo for the lack of sacks that he got on a yearly basis. Don't know that that was logical thinking on his part but someone was in his ear telling him this and he bought it. That was the reason he originally wanted to go to a 3-4 D, no one was willing to jump on that pony so he went to the highest bidder outside of Carolina.

Jake got the extension as a show of faith and because HURNEY and Fox believed that he would overcome his AZ game issues. He did not. Releasing him saved Jerry $0 because of the poison pill that stated he would be paid $12 million irregardless of whether he was a Panther. He was dropped to make way for Moore.

Starting Clausen at this point is probably about 80% JR's idea. Yes, Moore has played that poorly and the Offense does need a spark. JR also needs to put butts in the seats and no one can do that better than Clausen, at least until the bye week. If he is not playing well at that point then people will stop coming again. Moore may have gotten one more week of being the starter in other conditions but that is probably about it, one more week.

JR has set up this team to be very good in the future, we will most likely see a new coach, and more teams than the Browns are interested in Fox.

SS is not getting f**ked in this deal, he is making bank. Yes, he deserves a SB but a lot of great players have and never won one.

We will probably go 8-8 or slightly worse unless Clausen is the real deal, then we might see 9-7.

Thanks for reading House, and thank you all for taking the time. Glad to see we have some thinkers on this board.

I didn't know that about Peppers, so I appreciate you filling me in. But do you also not think the fact Richardson planned to purge us of all high end vets motivate him to do it sooner?

And no Smitty is not getting fuged as an employee, money wise. But as a career player I just think this team's circumstances never worked out in his favor as far as solidifying himself as the receiver he really is.

I agree with everything else.

JR is just going lean in preparation for the lockout. He knows its coming as he is the main one driving it. He is the leader of the owners.

Expect a throw away season in 2010

Expect a wasted season in 2011

Expect 2012 and probably 2013 to be pure rebuilding

Expect Superbowl 2014

I don't think it would take 2 years after the lockout if it takes place to put us in a spot for a Superbowl. That's too long thanks to Richardson prepping the team this year. Whatever the new cap may be we will be far under with this team. So logistically it will be easy for the staff to build it. Figure out how much money you have and spend it.

You don't have to make room, you don't have to worry too much about trading.

If lockout I say 2013 expect superbowl.

With no lockout I expect 2012, but depending on if new staff changes at the end of this season or mid-season...2011 is not out of the question either. Fox could still agree to leave earlier.

You need to realize THIS year, is part of that process, only problem is Fox decided to stick around. It's a rebuilding process for the team, unfortunatelly not with the right staff. But if Richardson gave Fox the opportunity to go, who is to say the new coach isn't already picked and working out the logistics on the side as this season unfolds?

Depends on the contract I'm sure. But if WCCB can't show a game because of NFL rules, I'm pretty sure they aren't going to be giving as much money to the Panthers for having to air something else.

Actually I don't think so but feel free to prove me wrong.

I think CBS/ESPN etc paid up front for the rights to broadcast. I am also certain that each team gets an equal check for the TV deal so at worst it is split 32 ways.

When tickets are not sold the TV station will buy the tickets as to not lose commercial revenue.

I'm too lazy to google much more

I just don't think that Peppers had any idea of what JR was planning to do with the "veteran purge" as much as 2 1/2 seasons ago. I really doubt that JR would have told Pep his business decisions for the future in that regard.

Honestly, I don't think that this was something that was years in the making either. I believe that the horrible season that the team had last year is what set this all in motion. If the Panthers would have been true contenders last year, I doubt you see the amount of turnover as you saw this year. Some vets may have been moved to make room for younger guys but not at the rate that was witnessed.

Perhaps you are right but the lockout talks did start in 2009. Maybe JR didn't personally tell Peppers that but I'm sure they have their own sources of rumors and internal happenings.

You think it was also last year that caused Richardson to want to get rid of Fox? Or was it just a decision that we need some new blood and a new system? Do you think Richardson has his man already picked if he was willing to let Fox go?

Why in the world would football not resume during the 2011 season if there was a lockout?

Because that's what a lockout means. They plan on locking out the season till the agree. They could come to agreement sooner though, and no lockout could happen, or perhaps a shorter season....12-14 games....I believe that has happened before. But if more than half the season goes by and no agreement takes place there will be no footbal in 2011.
