Suicide U?

WTF? Are these kids homeschooled and don't know who to relate to other kids. (Studies show children that are home schooled have trouble interacting with other students when they are introduced into a school system.)

Suicide plagues university campuses

I know this article isn't new, but the Grodon Ramsey story made me think about it. 20/20 did a spot on it, not long ago.

Joann Mitchell Levy, a 23-year-old graduate student at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts jumped to her death from the roof of a 12 story building last Tuesday. 19-year-old sophomore Susan Shin of GW jumped to her death from her eighth story apartment last Wednesday. And 19-year-old Princeton sophomore Melissa Huang was found dead in her dorm room the previous Sunday, although the cause of death in this case is yet to be determined.

While this is the first on-campus student death at Princeton since a graduate student committed suicide in January of 2003, NYU and GW are now addressing a growing trend. Levy was the sixth NYU student to take her own life in the past year, while Shin was the third at GW.

On a side note: One of my college roommates decided to work the College Suicide Hotline on Friday and Saturday nights. (He was a Criminology Major so that should answer your question as to why someone would work on the weekend.)

Of course, I wasn't any better. I was an engineering major and worked as a late night DJ for the University radio station. (I had a better jazz record collection than the univeristy did!) "Sit back, relax. A little George Benson comin' at cha right now!"

He got canned when he was listening to a student talk about their life one night. He got bored after about 20-30 minutes of monotonus whinning. He said, "Man, your life really sucks."

You don't have to be socially awkward to commit suicide. No matter race, creed, finances, etc anyone can commit suicide. Some people just don't have any passion to live. Also I don't see how you can say it's selfish to commit suicide. What's selfish is reproducing. At least with suicide the person is only affecting their own life and not someone else's.

I think socially awkward people have more of a predisposition to suicide. If a socially healthy person is thinking about suicide, they would be more likely to find and accept help. If you can't even interact with people to begin with, how can you even begin to understand the help people are trying to give you?

Furthermore, suicide is the most selfish thing you can do. I mean seriously, you can't argue with that...it to a T fits the definition of selfish. If being yourself means you want to be dead, there ya go.

And I've had some homeschooled friends before, one was a roommate of mine. He came from a Christian, nuclear family, and was homeschooled until the 10th grade. He had some serious social issues and phobias. He wasn't suicidal but he had a destructive and tempermental personality (could have just been him).

Being homeschooled does mean you have less interaction with people and you will be hampered socially because of it. I mean how can you have the constant social interactions you have at school, when you're at home? It's just not logical.

My homeschooled friend is extremely masoganistic. Being homeschooled definitely pushed him in that direction since his interactions with women were more limited, but of course other factors like your parents and religious beliefs can affect that too.

are students the only group of people in which suicide is going up?

doubt it.

NOt these days. The economy has had a hand in suicide rates increasing.

My Mother's best friend in high school had her Father jump to his death. This was back during the Depression (What a name for it!) He as a banker and lost everything. His Family was devistated, I would say his Family lost even more!

I agree that suicide does effect other people. It effects the ones you leave behind.

It's a case by case thing though. Too much generalizing. Some people who commit suicide may not be leaving anyone behind (there are lots of cases of old people committing suicide). Also they might be leaving bad people behind. A lot of times in suicide cases you hear about abuse leading to it.

I strongly support suicide and assisted suicide. It is a basic human right, imo, unless you fail at it in which case there probably should be a penalty.

In Japan it's considered honorable sometimes. This whole "suicide is selfish" thing baffles me, too.

People who attempt it multiple times, but never in a way that's a surefire way to succeed, are selfish attention seekers. My stepsister is one. But people who are just miserable and can't go on and don't want to beg people for help, I don't see the selfishness there. I see someone who doesn't want to drag others down with him or her.
