HDMI Cable

Things like interelectrode capacitance dont care if a signal is digital or analog. If the signal is degraded during a digital transmission then the TV (in this case) has to either interpolate the missing data or request the source device resend the packet. That's going to result in a loss of fidelity.

Im only saying that buying a more expensive cable isnt the snake oil a lot of folks make it out to be. Particularly when your dealing with the more high end gear. There is a reason companies like Transparent Audio exist, and it not simply to prey on the stupid and wealthy.

those guys sell $10,000 cables. how much do you think those cables cost to make?

the reality of the situation is that I know quite a few professional sound mixers and cinematographers, I also work as a picture editor and a sound editor. Nobody i know uses gear like this to MAKE movies. If gear like this isn't being used to record the audio that you are listening to what could it possibly add to the end product?

Get the cheaper ones... All you really need to worry about is ver1.3 or if you have invested in 3D go with ver1.4... Go to monoprice.com or somewhere similar... Out of the $130 paid for a Monster cable, $100 is easily for that Monster logo to be on it...

In a perfect world the idea that all cables are created equal is in fact true.

The reality though is that you get varying degrees of materials and craftsmanship. With an el-cheapo cable you may get a connector that's poorly soldered and clamped on the cable. Or insulation thats susseptible to interference from other sources. Or wires inside the cable that are misaligned or not wound to spec.

You might never notice a difference in the 5 dollar no-name cable and the 100 dollar one. Then again you might wonder why you seem to have worse motion blur than your neighbor seems to.

Monster Cable really sold me on there Fiber Optic Audio cable. I blew through about 5 sets of Toslink and Sony both only lasting a few months. It got to the point were I was thinking there was a problem with my hardware.

I took one last shot and bought one of the higher end Monster Fiber Optics and haven't had a problem & I've had it about 2yrs.

I suspect that since my hardware is clustered in one area that this was perhaps a shielding issue which caused the cheaper cable to fail were as the thicker better built monster is holding up.

So, about a year ago I purchased an HDMI cable to use for my PS3. I purchased a $130 Monster Cable. I'd like to get another one for my Xbox that is in another room from the PS3. After I spent a pretty substantial amount of money on the first one, I read online that there really is no difference in quality if you purchase an expensive one or a cheaper one. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I have a bridge in Booklyn for sale! Are you interested?

Seriously, I always like to go with a higher quality cable if the run is longer than 6-10 feet.

But when your connecting your Levinson media console unit to your NTT Audiolab speakers and your Runco projector whats a $10,000 cable?

god, to have that kind of problem.

:drool5:

and fwiw I have my Genelecs hooked up with switchcraft XLRs and generic AC cables routed through an apc unit. Sounds great.

might just be that you were crimping the thinner ones by accident. I don't see why light-pipes would need shielding.

Yeah I'm not sure if heat can effect the core fibers or not. I know Toslink uses quartz I'm not sure what Monster uses, I know I definitely wasn't crimping anything.

Either way I'm satisfied.
