Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

Recommended Posts

1. Overall, the good with Hurney outweighs the bad. Everyone is transfixed by the horrors of Everette Brown and Jake Delhomme, but I doubt we'll ever know the full story behind that. For all we know, there might be a reason Fox was kept out of drafting after the 2009 season. Hurney is also fantastic with contracts, something that can't be overlooked.

2. Most importantly, it sends a terrible message to any potential replacement. Here's a guy that just did what the owner instructed him to do, and on top of that has been paraded out in front of the media every week to be pilloried. The guy has no more swords to fall on, yet has become the defacto face of the franchise in lieu of the owner.

To fire him after all he's done (sacrificing his public and professional reputation for Jerry's vendetta) would basically tell every other potential GM that the owner will flush you down the drain the second it's convenient.

We're already going to have enough trouble finding a coach after the way Richardson has handcuffed Fox. Let's not make it a GM as well.

Quite frankly, I would not mind if both Fox and Hurney were gone.

We have given up far too much in the past several drafts to make any good reason for him to stay.

Trading up for an elite QB is one thing. Trading up for E. Brown and A. Edwards, something else again.

The crap that went on for DTs, none of which who are on the team right now, another example.

He's Jerry Richardson's Boy...just like Wade was Jerry Jones' boy...sometimes, that type of relationship ends too and should.

neither of these address my two central points.

Hurney and Fox had far more control over the team than Wade ever had in Dallas.

The only thing with the contract was the size of it, but then again, I've had some conversations with people on here and elsewhere, and I really don't get the feeling we'll ever know the full story.

Don't forget, it gained us cap space in a year where Peppers' figure was killing us.

I believe Hurney basically does what he is told in drafting by Fox and how much someone gets paid by Richardson.

Media has touted that Fox and Hurney are "on the same page for llifffeezzz" but I think he would be on the same page with any coach.

Also like Fiz said, he basically runs into brick walls and flamethrowers with the media every week.

I concur wholeheartedly with your main points. Sure, there have been the occasional head scratchers like Everette Brown, Armanti Edwards and a couple of the DT moves. But I also think there have been relatively good moves the coaching staff has simply failed to develop (Eric Shelton, Keary Colbert and a couple others I'm sure I've missed).

And you're right, Jerry Richardson is going to have some difficulties finding a new HC, not to mention the very likely possibility of having a few free agents decide elsewhere might be a better option given the 2010 fire sale bargain basement edition of the Carolina Panthers.

well you can do that without dumping a uhaul full of cash on his front yard.

I agreed with the restructuring at the time, however, and if Jake had continued to perform at 2008 levels it wouldn't have been as bad.

Point taken Fiz.

Too tired tonight to go back and look at every draft from Hurney. What I do know is he failed to draft a franchise QB (and he had opportunites at Ben, Flacco and even to get Brees as a free agent, all better than what we had), he failed to draft have decent DTs, he failed to find a 2nd receiver. He's failed at a lot of things. Instead of getting something for Peppers, Peppers walked. He wrote a check to Delhomme that could choke a horse and the deicsions on Peppers that lead to Delhomme, put us were we are now with absolutely no depth on the oline.

As far as the message it sends, maybe it should be, we want the best, not the good, not the want to be best, the best, and for that reason, Marty, you can either go back to salarly cap or you can leave, but, you do not get to judge talent anymore, and that, after all is his job on draft day.

he's also succeeded at a lot of things. Fox and Hurney can beat a bush and find linebackers, secondary, and offensive linemen.

Every GM has a weakness. Ozzie Newsome, for example, can't draft secondary or wide receivers to save his life and he's considered the best in the league. Ernie Accorsi couldn't draft a linebacker if his life depended on it.

Also I don't necessarily think they failed to find a number 2 wide receiver. Keary could obviously play, and you can't fault him for not knowing he'd decide to quit playing football his second year.

    • They won my vote of confidence for this year
    • I really like the way this team is trending. Morgan and Canales rookie campaign saw them do some questionable picks but, they also did some really good things. Especially addressing the offensive line.  Young had such a disastrous rookie season where his confidence was nowhere to be seen.  You can attribute part of this to a terrible offensive line.  So, we focused on the O-line.   We then brought in several defensive free agents that were supposed to compliment Brown.  Once Brown went down those players could not hold the line.  2025 we focused on defense in Free Agency and brought in several good players.  We then added more talent in the draft.  I think we have competition in several areas where Vets are not guaranteed to be starters.  Our offensive line is pretty set with some good backups.  Our defensive line is going to be a war for who comes out to be the starters.  All in All, we are leaps and bounds much better than 2023 roster.  Canales made some rookie head coach mistakes but grew as the season progressed.  He got our QB, who was starting to look like a huge bust, playing with confidence and poise.  Now it appears Young is moving upwards.  Maybe he is a QB whisperer.  After Young started to play better our offense was fun to watch.  Morgan knows football and knows what he wants in his players.  It appears to me that not only are these players he's drafted really good and got great value for them, but they are also high motor, intense players. Our defense, in the past, was always the key to our success.  I think Morgan is building a great defense. I know it is too soon to tell but I believe we may have a tandem that will be around a long time.  It would be nice to see Morgan/Canales be in the same class as Lynch/Shanahan and Beane/McDermott.   I know many Huddlers will overreact, but I truly believe we have a tandem that will be around a long time. TIME WILL TELL. Go Panthers
