If we pick 1st, Luck doesn't declare, who do you want?

Are you sure? Because Brayton and Brown can't rush the passer, Hardy is good but had injury problems in college, leaving Johnson as our most reliable guy-and he may be best as a number two end. What's wrong with stockpiling pass rushers when we can and should adress DT in free agency? A DE is more worthy of a top two pick and is more valuable and impactful than both a corner or receiver, though I wouldn't have a problem with those picks. Bowers leads everything in sacks and TFL so its not like he doesn't produce.
hardy, johnson, and even brown have a lot of talent that would be seen more if we had a stouter interior Dline. if we improve DT, we will have automatically upgraded DE. i would rather us use that first overall on QB (luck or trade down for newton), CB (peterson...probably could get away with trading down a couple posts and still get him), aj green (as much confidence as i now have in gettis and lafell, how could we pass up on someone with that talent?). of the needs we have, the ones that i think are best addressed in the first round is just those three.: QB, CB, and WR, probably in that order.

The scenario presented in this topic is if Luck does not declare. Cam newton is a risk to say the least. Pass rush makes average CBs look good. And there are a ton of good FA WRs available this year, we could sign one of them too. What do people have against having a superior defensive line?

i have nothing against it, i do think that i would rather address the DT need in FA, though. there are a couple DTs in the draft that would be ok, but i'd want to trade before we got them. i just don't see any of these guys being on par with what was taken last year.

I don't think anyone is against having a superior dline. I think most people think the weaker area is our tackle spot, not at de where we seem to have some talent. Johnson, Brayton, Hardy and even Brown get decent to good pressure from the side, but all the QB needs to do is step up because our tackles are mostly trash.

Hard part there is there isn't any elite looking talent at either line spot. Fairley looks good, but not really top pick good. Bowers looks very good as well if we do go DE, but again, not elite.

Anyways, the only players who look worthy of a #1 overall are Green, Peterson and Luck. How often do CBs go #1 overall? Also, depending on our D scheme next year, if we're playing a zone/cover-2/tampa-2, we don't really NEED an all-world CB. Green is a monster, but we just drafted three WR last year, two of which are showing up pretty big for rookies. Neither looks like a #1 though. In this scenario, Luck hasn't declared, so he's out.

Also, IF Luck isn't there, one of Mallett, Locker or Newton will rise up near the top of the draft board, pending the combine. They'll be in the conversation at some point as well.

Trading down if Luck isn't there won't happen either, unless we allow ourselves to be fleeced. Nobody is going to give up a huge package of picks plus assume the #1 contract for Green, Peterson, Fairley, or any of Mallett/Locker/Newton.

I'd bite the bullet and just pick Green in that case.

yeah, there is no QB outside of luck that i would really want. i'd just rather go with clausen and see what he can do with the new offense. i'd either go green or trade down and pick up peterson or fairley/dareus. if luck isn't there, though, i don't see many people wanting to trade up to the first overall. there just isn't really anyone outside of luck willing to trade into that first overall pick this year and even then, it wouldn't happen unless the rookie cap is in place.

some team desperate for a QB might be willing to reach and trade up to get mallett, locker, or cam newton (if he wins the heisman), but i doubt that would happen.

    • Not sure who said it first, but Tepper is the correct answer. Still, I'm gonna go with Kasay keeping it inbounds. If, you subscribe to the butterfly effect version of time travel consequences.... When we win SBXXXVIII everybody's lives change: Moose never breaks his leg, We win it all again in 05. Tommy Jone is unknown and Peppers stays home, Champs once more 2008. No artificial pig heart turning JR into a creepy weirdo, no lockout, no Clausen. Fox and Jake ride off into the sunset on their own terms. No 2-14, no #1 pick. But, no laptop, no Blinn, 3 years behind The Golden Calf of Bristol, we still get Cam. JR let's him grow his locs like he always wanted, Smitty sees Cam in a new light. Dreads swinging, (and Smitty with his 3 Lombardis behind him) Cam is old enough to get those calls. No Manning narrative, Cotchery TD, PI against Talib on Philly Brown, 10,000 RTP calls and Kony Ealy SB50 MVP. No Jeans Fridays, no Tepper. KB doesn't slip on his own meatsweat mid-route in SD, Cam becomes the 1st QB to win 10 straight SBs. Retiring after being elected 47th president of the US of A, Cam ushers in the Permanent Proletarian Revolution across the globe, Xi Jinping bows in awe. "ẄøŘƙƐṛ§ őF ŧĤə ŵØRłð, ŮŊÏŦƐ!!!"
    • Yeah your right the owner was copping hand shandies while all this was going down
    • I mean not surprised the Patriots took him in and aren't trying to push him out. They've been the most morally bankrupt team in the NFL for a long while. Wouldn't be surprised if Vrabel has his own dirt on Kraft/Brady and other assholes from that organization over the last couple decades.
