yea and the lions have been saying that about the Tampa 2 for years, "all we need is system guys" thats gotten tham no where. Look at tampa, I mean they used a second overall (i think maybe 3rd) on gaines adams, simeon rice was in that system for years, derrick brooks, warren sapp era. You DO need big names to run the tampa 2 sucessfully, rhonde barber, john lynch the list goes on.

First off, we aren't the lions. Secondly, a lot of those guys on tampa's d BECAME big names. They weren't all big names coming out of college or big free agent pickups. They used a 4th overall on Gaines Adams because Rice was getting old. Hell their entire defense is getting old. We already have Very Athletic Linebackers to run the Tampa-2, Our corners can adjust to it, the only problem is D-line.

we're not going to run the tampa-2

Why not? We already run alot of cover 2 and the only big diifference is putting the middle linebacker further back in coverage. Beason has the ability to play in space as well as crash the line.

I am not a great proponent of the cover 2/Tampa 2 unless we can get a lot of pressure. Still there are some teams that do very well with it. Perhaps Meeks can do what Lewis could not which is to teach our secondary how to play zone. If we could be as consistent on defense as Tampa, I am sure I could learn to like it. It has always been said that it doesn't take as good an athlete to play in a system like a Tampa 2 compared to a man scheme. They are good tacklers and hitters but not great cover guys.

There is no chance in hell we a running Tampa-2. That formation is weak against the run, so you need outstanding run stuffing DTs. The Colts can play Tampa-2 without run stuffers because they score a sh*tload of points and opposing teams MUST throw to keep up. We're not running Tampa-2 without Peyton Manning, or big changes at the DT postion.

The Tampa 2 doesn't have to be weak against the run. Tampa has been close to us in run defense for the past 4 or 5 years. Plus their passing defense has been better. Teams run against them because they struggle to pass against them not because it is easy. It is true that the middle linebacker plays deeper in coverage but it just means he has to be mobile and quick which Beason surely is.

If we keep some big guys on the Dline we can be good against the run and the pass. Might be an opportunity for a little guy Like Hillee Taylor to get some PT. He should be around 255 by the time the season starts next year.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
