Those who want Cam Newton First overall...

skin color has everything to do with why certain guys get asked questions about work ethic and commitment. And other QBs are naturally assumed to have it. Nothing new to see here. Panther fans being Panther fans. Par for the course.

No one asked about Clausens either. In fact it was used as his selling point as is all our QBs. It damn sure aint their "raw athletic ability". Trust if they could have some, Luck and Clausen would gladly like to have some of that "raw ahtletic ability" to use in their games. It would make them better QBs, hell might even make opposing fans want to watch them play.

it ain't skin color, it is style of play. See The Golden Calf of Bristol.

when running is a big part of what makes you great in college.....it does need to be talked about. B/c very few can effectively do it in the NFL.

I will say this much.

From what I have seen from Cam, if Smitty had went up to him point his finger in his face, doing what Smitty does, Cam would have manned up and said "Don't drop the easy ones, and I will get you the ball" instead of staring at the scoreboard and acting like he wasn't there.

Same goes for Lucky too

I think if he were white, no one would worry about his work ethic or cerebral ablility. Or if he's gonna spend all our money on fried chicken and booze if we draft him. Just Panther fans being Panther fans. And not a single person will confront Rhys for it. He speaks for us. No one's asking these questions about Luck, and he's the guy who's actually lost a game. No one prepares harder than Cam Newton. No QB out there is more equipped to dealing with pressure and adversity than Cam Newton. I havent seen or heard anything to make me believe Andrew Luck will thrive in an adverse situation without Jim Harbrough leading him. How do we know this kid will be the same QB without him? We dont.

Look buddy, I haven't come on here praising Luck. I'd also appreciate it if you'd stop making me out to be racist because I believe Newton isn't mature enough for the NFL. If you'd actually read what I'm saying you might understand that. I live in downtown Raleigh, I voted for Obama, and I'm likely to vote for him again in 2012. I could probably talk your ear off about politics. My brother dates a black girl and I'm good friends with her and her family. I work with black people, in fact some of my favorite people at work are black. So it seriously pisses me off when you indirectly accuse me of this and don't read my points. I don't need to convince you of anything, but give me the benefit of the doubt before you go around throwing in these stereotypes of what you think Panthers fans are. You're perpetuating this issue by falsely accusing people when they have logical points that have nothing to do with skin color.

I'll say it again, I question Newton's maturity and motivations given what he has been said to have gone through in his time at college, and those are reservations you do not want to have with a possible franchise QB.

I had these questions about Clausen as well, I found it unnerving when scouts were questioning his attitude, and when 30 or so teams skipped him in the draft, and I yelled out in disgust when the Panthers drafted him. I wanted Golden Tate.

So I'm worried about picking up Newton.

I think it is clear that we need one of the two of them. I just hope we make the right choice.

I have no idea which of them will be and possibly it could be either.

Rhys,

I don't question why you think as you have posted but I do ask this: Do you think that Cam could "grow up" quickly supposing that he has a maturity issue? I think it is possible hypothetically. Of course I'm not certain that he hasn't already. I will admit that the whole laptop thing was very questionable.

Luck doesnt have alot "raw athletic ability". If he did, he'd use it. And more than likely his team would not have lost a game because of it. Which is part of the problem for the QBs we already have. They're asked to rely on their "smarts" SOLELY and end up getting crushed in the pocket each week for it.

That's pretty dumb. Luck is exceptionally athletic.

I agree with this except the bolded part. Stop acting like such a martyr.

Well, unfortunately for us all, Cam Newton wasn't available at the 42nd pick in last year's draft. Clausen was.

Yuck

Yea I know, shows you how much I know about college prospects. Mainly I just wanted a WR that could be mediocre quickly, because I was convinced we could do well this year with Moore under center.

Maybe this completely nullifies all my points

Absolutely he could grow up. That's why he's a risk/reward type of guy. Without those reservations about his maturity I would absolutely want the guy on our team. I mean, given some time to develop his talents to an NFL caliber, he could be extremely dangerous.

If we do draft him, I will be extremely worried, but then also, I would be fairly excited to see if what he could do, and if he could turn into the type of franchise QB we've always wanted.

i'm telling ya. its a no lose if the Panthers get Luck or Newton. And for the morons who compare Newton to Jamarcus, please read Football for Dummies. Not even close.

The only edge I give to Luck is the coaching and style of offense he has played. That gives him a very very slight advantage.

Newton to me is a taller and faster McNabb. Luck reminds me alot of Aaron Rodgers. I could live with either of those two NFL players on the Panthers and likewise with Cam or Luck.

    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
    • Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me. Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
    • That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
