How will the Gator Bowl effect Harbaugh/UM/Carolina?

After watching Mississippi State straight up destroy Michigan in every facet of the game how attractive does that job look? 3-5 in a weak conference, low level of talent defensively, unreasonable boosters, etc.. 49ers can offer a job close to home but that is pretty much it. They have a mess of a front office, a horrible QB situation, bad ownership, and so forth. Harbaugh could go to Carolina, get paid, coach up his big time QB from Stanford, and he would inherit a team that has young talent all over the roster. If I'm Harbaugh it's a no brainer to sign with the Panthers.

The san fran thing being close to home is only so relevant. I assume he only lives out in ca cuz of his current job. I really think its down to us and Michigan.

NFC South is the hardest division in the league, from top to bottom. A few tweaks and Carolina is a contender again. Why wouldn't a coach want to come here and prove how good he is or isn't. Yeah, he could go easy and go to SF and into the shittiest division, but does that really prove anything?

Of course competing with Carroll again is probably tempting....

Don't count out Stanford keeping him. I think they will make a strong attempt.

I think this was a very good thing, even if Harbaugh doesn't come to Carolina.

Michigan getting owned pretty much assures that Rich Rodriguez is OUT. That alone pretty much guarantees Harbaugh won't be at Stanford next season, which increases the chances of Luck entering the draft.

I personally don't see Harbaugh coming here. I think he goes to Michigan, and Luck declares so he doesn't have to deal with a new coaching staff.

Stanford will never pass up either Oregon and USC when they are back. Not to mention Washington who is on the up and up in that conference. It's just an easier job getting in talent to those programs on a yearly basis than Stanford. He's best suited making the jump to a respectable NFL team in a nice city.

it was ridiculous how ugly that game was. MSU could have put up 70 if they had wanted to. I don't think Michigan scored outside of the 1st quarter.

and if he doesn't choose the NFL; Michigan will for sure offer him a better chance at success at the college level.

Harbaugh is looking at a 3-5 year rebuilding job at Michigan. In Carolina depending on Luck that could be a year or two. With how fast rookie QBs have adapted lately he could do pretty well immediately with the Panthers. I just don't see how he could win quickly at Michigan. He would have to recruit the players for a pro-style offense when he has a cupboard full of spread option guys, a JV quality defense, and the perception of Michigan being a fallen program since Carr's 2nd to last year or so. That hyped up OSU-Michigan game in 2006 seems like a decade ago.

Just like with a draft pick he's taking a risk no matter what he decides to do.

He could go to Michigan and (theoretically) immediately win...somehow - he could also come to Carolina and be in a black pit of losing despair for years.

I do think you're right in that his odds are better in Carolina though - assuming the "wtf college coaches can't coach in the NFL" bug doesn't bite him.

    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
