Why is Smith Inactive?

He's never been a great route runner.

One big strength was being able to reel in highlight worthy catches in double coverage, regardless of the inaccurate lame duck passes that were chucked up to him. This year at one point he lead the NFC in drops, he's not making those same plays.

His other big strength was being a huge YAC threat, the ability to take a 2 yard pass and turn it into an 50+ yard TD. This year his YAC total is behind guys like Kevin Boss, Terrell Owens, Braylon Edwards. He's tied with Brian Hartline.

There's only so much you can blame on a QB. To me it's obvious that he's fallen off as he has been for awhile now. But as mentioned, hopefully some team thinks it's all because of our QBs/offensive system/playcalling/ect and sends up some high pick, though I doubt we get more than a 4th or 5th.

I agree he hasn't looked like the same player this year, and I even said he looked like he lost a step myself. And of course, the drops and fumbles were uncharacteristic and are all on him. But, I'm not sure how much the surround circumstances affected him...

I certainly think they impacted his play - Rumors of problems in his personal life, coaching, QB, helped only by rookie WRs, the OL fell off...

I think a new coach that figures out how to get him the ball in creative ways and a QB that can do it will give him new life.

imagine the numbers smitty would have had with decent qb his whole career.easy HOF candidate

He started as a return man and has been injured several times in his career, once for an entire season. There's only so many years that he's been in his prime as a WR and healthy. Most HOF guys have huge career totals because they are great from day 1 and able to stay healthy and produce consistently for many years. He'd be better with a great QB sure, but I wouldn't exactly say an easy HOF candidate.

I've been wondering if the Smith injury has been a setup since his talk with Richardson. Keep him from being injured his last game to get the most trade value for him in the off season. I knew he sat out of practice some this week, but never heard a word about how he got injured. He's got nothing to play for, stay healthy, get traded in the offseason.

See him there on the sideline. He should have stayed home.
