Great Artice on JR by Rick Bonnell

i only saw the edited video. it seems like everyone is overreacting unless panthers.com cut all the good stuff out???

Listened to it live. It was embarrassing. If he soooo needed to know who everyone in attendance was, he needed to come in prior to the conference to find out or have a camera with a feed to his pre-conference area and someone brief him.

As someone from here on twitter said, he sounded like that old, drunk uncle.

In no way shape or form should/do I want him to say anything about the coaching search. We will be fine watching the press conference. If we know it, everyone knows. Pretty basic concept.

Coaches/Owners aren't gonna tip their hands as far as the off season goes, nor should they. Why people expect certain subjects discussed in public is beyond me.

I'm not saying I was sitting there with my jaw dropped in disgust. I actually laughed at a few of the things he said, but simultaneously, I was thinking "wow, this isn't the JR I remember."

Afterward, some of it did seem offensive because of the context. I'm sure he was pissed about the "cheap" comments, but that was mostly national media, not local, yet he chastised the local guys for it.

And after not talking to the media in this many years, I don't get how everyone was saying he was blunt... Many of the questions he laughed off or joked around and didn't answer directly.

Someone still should acknowledge that there was some dishonesty in there somewhere about the Harbaugh "contact" question... At least it wasn't full disclosure it appears.

I'm all for jokes and fun, but today I wanted more answers than jokes. I heard someone mention earlier on the radio today that someone should've asked about Smitty's situation. Yet, I think the media was so shellshocked, that if they had that question in mind, they quickly forgot it.

He may have rambled a bit on a few things, but that is just being his age, and where he's from. I didn't take it as him avoiding anything. I did sense some anger, maybe somewhat justified, at a lot of the media. I don't think he was directing it at everyone in general (well, maybe a few huddlers, but doubful since he just learned to use a cell phone).

As for the media being shell-shocked, I think they were genuinely scared to freakin' death the way he started off the Q&A... "WHO ARE YOU?!!! AND WHERE DO YOU WORK?!!!"

I think the next thing they expected to come out of his mouth was "GTFO"

I think the "who are you" thing was quite intentional. It immediately set a tone in the room, and put him in control.

As for his speech, I know quite a few old southerners that talk like that, and know enough that you don't mistake that slow talk and occasional slurring as not being on the ball.

Fox doesn't say enough, JR says too much. Jesus what do you people want around here? He came into that room, took command of the situation and said it like it was; I'm sorry you can't handle direct talk. Maybe 'it is what it is' would be more to your liking?

I get that, but i thought he was blunt and transparent?

Saying they were pursuing Harbaugh doesn't appear to be hurting the 49ers.

I don't expect to hear details of what's going on behind the scenes, but JR fans are giving him an easy out.

I love JR and appreciate him bring us the NFL, but I want to win. And I don't like being fooled around with. He can't have it both ways...

Just like the comments on Fox - he just got done trashing him then Hurney goes directly into how hiring an assistant "worked" last time, lol. It didn't appear like he was on top of things to me. Then everyone keeps saying he's not cheap because he paid Fox. And I agree, to a degree... He's still paying Jake. He paid Gross, Gamble, etc.

BUT, to hold the franchise and fans hostage with Fox knowing he was failing himself because he didn't want to pay two coaches contradicts what the Jake, Gross, Gamble moves suggested.

Actually, I'm saying that he didn't say enough in his own way. Using more words and taking longer to say them doesn't mean he's saying more or "too much." That's my problem.

He seemed as sharp as ever. I laugh at the people who hear him talk and judge him. He's a southern boy through and through.

Bonnell doesn't cover the Panthers, so he can write what he wants and speak for those who worik there. There was nothing sexual or suggestive about the way he handled Morgan, and there are writers lying to the public in the name of his team. For example, Gantt told people this conference was going to be a "major announcement" and he wrote that his sources confirmed that the panthers have been in conversation with Harbaugh for the past 2 weeks.

Having said that, you just finished 2-14 and ticket holders wanted hope and not pie charts. Your dry sense of humor may not be understood by all, and there is a 21 year old QB watching us closely as he decides whether or not to turn pro. I wonder what he thinks about this?

:iagree: I don't feel like that was the same Jerry Richardson that we have seen before. It certainly wasn't the same man who spoke during Mike Minter's retirement press conference just a few years ago. He did seem to ramble and lose his train of thought at times. Seems the only thing he was focused on when speaking about it was the CBA negotiations.

I also think it will not help us sign any FA's, whenever we do get around to signing FA's. Or signing the first choice for coach.

And you guys can joke around all you want about his treatment of Fogerty but as a women I was offended by his attitude.

Well put. That's really what I'm trying to get across. I got the humor, I got the jokes, but it just wasn't the place or time. I kept thinking when he was discussing Harbaugh how Harbaugh or Luck would take what he was saying? How did that presser look to them? Luck doesn't know JR. He might not understand any of the reasoning behind what he said or did today...

And as I said in the other thread, how does it look to Luck that Harbaugh played here and JR is claiming he doesn't know him, hasn't talked to him, and doesn't really plan to. So that's how employment works for the Carolina Panthers? It was just awkward and I don't think he handled it well.

But, maybe when all he's focused on is the "business model" and the new CBA, he doesn't care how he comes off.

I really hope he didn't turn Luck off from coming here.

    • I'm not saying it shouldn't be a part of his game it should be present yes. But expecting 500/10 in the rushing category is not sustainable IMO. All it's going to take is a defender to be willing to sacrifice a penalty or a fine to send a message just as the Falcons did with Sam Darnold. And even as big and durable as Cam was defenses eventually started to try to send a message to him too. We have to be realistic about not putting our QB at unnecessary risk. Especially given the fact we aren't even willing to run a QB sneak with him. We've also invested a good bit in our backfield that's what they're there for. And furthermore ultimately whatever QB  tier Bryce Young ends up landing in over the course of his career it is going to be defined by what he does as a passer not his rushing ability. That's all I'm saying.
    • Bryce had 191 yards 55% completion 1 td 1 pick.  That's an amazing performance?   Come on people
    • His footwork has been discussed many times over related to not just within the pocket but the quality of his drop backs and how while his receivers have been an issue his own footwork has created issues with his receivers. It is a mutual give and take dynamic after all. As far as his deep passing goes I will happily admit I saw some very impressive long throws from Bryce later in the season and I said so at the time and I'm still saying so now. That doesn't mean that there still aren't issues and beyond some instances of him flat out missing receivers deep that he knows he needs to get corrected I think there are still some throws to the sideline that defenses are going to test Bryce on early and often and until he can prove he can beat defenses on those throws consistently they will play him the same way. As far as talk of Bryce being top ten and the metrics that define that different people are going to have different answers and I've said before after the conclusion of the 2024 season that I'm going to try to put yardage aside in some cases and just focus on what Bryce is doing both between the 20's moving the ball and how our redzone scoring percentage is looking. The biggest thing I'm looking for this season is scoring points. Not just field goals. Touchdowns. If the offense is moving consistently and reaching the end zone more often than not and not squandering drives and settling for field goals then I am going to be content for the time being. I do not expect miracles this season. I expect development and competiveness on both sides of the ball but particularly the offense trending upward given the investments we've made. And no blowout losses. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask do you agree? 🫡
