Clausen will develop into a fine qb next season.

I am not sure about Clausen, but one ability he showed in college was that he can improve, drastically. His first year stats were highly disappointing. He completed 56% of his passes for 5 yards an attempt with 7 TDs and 6 INTs. 6 of the TDs came in two of the weaker games on the schedule. In the other 8 games that was 1 TD/6 INTs, with an awful completion percentage and yards per attempt. That sounds like a familiar level of futility.

In his sophomore season he made significant progress, and by his junior year his completion percentage was 68, yards per attempt almost 9, with 28 TDs and 4 INTs, all staggering numbers.

I am not saying because of this he will necessarily improve in the NFL. However, the point is he didn't just walk into Charlie Weis's offense and look like a star. After his freshman year, his numbers were terrible, and in many of the specific ways his numbers were terrible this year(low INT total, but very few TDs and terrible completion % and ypa numbers), and I can imagine many Notre Dame supporters asked the same kinds of questions being asked about Clausen now. Of course many QBs improved in college and busted in the NFL, but because of the parallels in his weaknesses his freshman year, there is a glimmer of hope. If anything, he seems to have the desire and work ethic to improve, and considering the massive expectations he did not meet early on at Notre Dame, resiliency.

I just think Clausen needs to mature as a man in order to lead an NFL team. That's basically his biggest problem. He really does appear to be just an immature kid. That, more than anything, is what's holding him back.

From what I can tell, Clausen is well respected by his teammates.

From Notre Dame...

“Anyone who says that stuff isn’t seeing the same Jimmy that we see,” Tate said of the co-offensive captain. “For me it’s kind of frustrating, because what I see is a guy who’s very passionate about the sport, who works hard and puts his team in position to win. I see him more as a family member than as a teammate.”

Added ex-Irish receiver David Grimes, who played with Clausen in South Bend in ’07 and ’08: “Seeing Jimmy mature from when he came in as a freshman, it’s light years apart. It’s sad to hear this stuff that’s being said. Jimmy’s a great kid. I don’t think anybody who played with him would badmouth the guy.”

From Jon Beason...

"I look for him to mature and grow," said linebacker Jon Beason, one of the veteran players Clausen has regularly sought out for advice during this trying season. "A lot of times when you have a lot of bad things happen consistently, when the good things you cherish them and hold on to them."

Beason says the rookie is tough-minded enough to get through this.

"Oh absolutely, he's a tough kid for sure," Beason said.

I am not in a position to know, but most of the evidence from the ones who are seems to indicate Clausen is mature. And if maturity is actually his greatest issue as opposed to physical abilities, that's great because I believe we can count on a 23 year old maturing to a greater extent than we can his physical abilities drastically improving.

Based on what?

Based on absolutely everything I have seen on him from the moment he opened his mouth after draft, to the moment he twitted he was going to the movies the day he got announced as a starter, to the way he carried himself on the field, to the way he doesn't look or act the part, to the way he speaks in press conferences with fear crackling through his every word(clearly reciting and rehashing what was given to him), to the way he disappeared off the face of the planet when he got benched, to the way he finished the season to today when he's twitting pictures of him flying through the mountains.

Nothing about his behavior over the past year screamed maturity, character or leadership.

No reason to have to stick with Clausen. He is no where near ready for this level. Unless you know you want to play a game with an extremely limited offense. I think he could be a player. But he obviously has a long way to go. We'd be better off calling Jeff Garcia than sticking with Clausen next year.

Yeah, even if Clausen can become an NFL caliber QB, we're crazy if that's all we go into 2011 with at the position.

Truth is, Clausen never had a chance. And I've said this all along; I was on the Luck bandwagon because he's going to be a stud and IS a can't miss prospect, but I've thought all along Clausen could develop if we get the right staff to develop him.

Last year he was working with one of the worst offensive coaching staff's ever assembled, IMO. If we get an actual good QB coach, solid O.C., and open up the passing game like Jerry indicated to the CN&O then Clausen might actually do something. He'll never be what Luck eventually will be, but he's gotta be better than what we saw last year.

Food for thought: Clausen also had an awful freshman year at N.D. He made a huge leap his sophmore year. It's not impossible to imagine him doing the same here, but I do think it depends on the offensive coaching staff we put together.

I think we could actually go after Josh McDaniels for O.C. I wouldn't have considered him an option, but after what's being written on the Charlotte Observer site I think we're going to look hard at the best offensive coordinator available and he may be it.

Plus, he's a great developer of QB's. He actually made Kyle Orton look good in Denver. Anyone remember how awful he was with the Bears? That's all McDaniels.
