Assistant Coach Options

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

A coordinator job is still a step up, and his contract in Green Bay might be over.

As I suspected they might, the Raiders are dumping one of their offensive guys, specifically Paul Hackett. He'd have been a good option for Qb Coach, but they hired Shula so we'll see what happens.

With the playoffs out of the way, will be no surprise if the rest of the staff is in place by week's end.

I highly doubt anyone from the final four staffs will be a factor here.

As for Moss, he's highly regarded there and doesn't get enough credit because he's not Dom's guy. People are falling all over themselves to talk about Kevin Greene when Moss is just a better coach. Only way he goes out is to get out of Dom's shadow.

I think there are some possible acquisitions. Granted, availability would depend on contract status, but there are some former Rivera and Chudzinski colleagues in the group.

Guys I could see us being interested in...

Edgar Bennett (RB Coach, Packers)

- played against Ron Rivera in his first year with the Packers, Rivera's last with the Bears

- coached alongside Rivera as a member of the Bears staff in 1998

Tim Spencer (RB Coach, Bears)

- started with the Bears the same year Rivera did

- has done a decent job with Bears RBs

Anthony Lynn (RB Coach, Jets)

- was the RB coach in Cleveland for Rob Chudzinski's first year as Browns OC

- worked with former Panthers DC Jack Del Rio for two years in Jacksonville

Scottie Montgomery (WR Coach, Steelers)

- Born in Shelby NC and graduated from Duke University

- came into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Panthers; only one year pro-coaching experience

Darryl Drake (WR Coach, Bears)

- started with the Bears the same year Rivera did, coached former Panther Muhsin Muhammad

- Bears haven't generally had great receivers, so what's his selling point?

Jerry Fontenot (Assistant OL Coach, Packers)

- four year teammate of Ron Rivera as a center with the Bears

- could serve as a protege for John Matsko, who's one of the older coaches on the Panthers staff

Harold Goodwin (Assistant OL / Offensive QC, Steelers)

- could be a potential Offensive QC option since the OL coaching spot is filled

- was with the Bears in a similar capacity for the three years Rivera was DC

Mark Carrier (DL Coach, Jets)

- three year teammate of Ron Rivera as a Bears defensive back

- previously worked with OL Coach Matsko on the Ravens staff

Bob Babich (LB Coach, Steelers)

- worked as LB coach while Rivera was DC with the Bears

- was the guy who replaced Rivera, and was said to be Lovie Smith's preference, so it's unknown if Rivera would want him (hard feelings?)

Kevin Greene (OLB Coach, Packers)

- played three years with the Panthers, would have been four but for a contract holdout

- all playing and coaching experience two years) is in 3-4 defensive systems

Jim Arthur (Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, Bears)

- two year colleague of Ron Rivera with the Bears

- as an assistant, might be made available for promotion to full coach

Dave Redding (Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, Packers)

- worked with the Chargers during Rob Chudzinski's initial two-year stint as TE Coach

- loads of experience, also potentially promotable as an assistant

Guys I could see us

Just highly unlikely, all I'm saying. Much more likely it's an available coach.

Possible. My question would be if they were available before, why aren't they in place already?

Granted, there could be other reasons, but the timing of it (mixed with Rivera's presser comments) makes me think we were waiting on someone.

less important hires, possibly, in their mind. Wait for senior bowl, when the coaches are there so you're not flying people in unnecessarily.

Nobody's hiring right now, as far as I know. You get ready for the senior bowl, and get to business there.

That seems much more likely than the idea that position coaches who are under contract with top four teams are going to jump to a current bottom dweller for essentially no personal gain. Maybe one of the QC guys could become position coaches, but honestly the ties aren't that strong with this list.

The Eagles and Broncos are still working on their DC searches, plus Philly has to backfill for the loss of Jauron. The Vikings just hired an RB coach today (wasn't Huey, so he's still out there). The Browns still have vacancies to fill (Redskins just denied permission for them to interview Danny Smith) as do the Raiders.

As far as the teams, we don't know who's under contract and who isn't. Well, with one exception: We know Dick LeBeau is out of contract, but anyone who believes they can pry him away from Pittsburgh is dreaming.

thought mark carrier was db coach

He played defensive back, and he coached DBs with the Ravens, but with the Jets he coaches defensive line.

It happens. Bryan Cox is another guy who played one position (LB) but coaches another (DL, ironically enough).

Confirmation thatt he Panthers have now formally interviewed Jim Skipper (link)

Coach Rivera is still in Charlotte but will head to the Senior Bowl soon. Expect more interviews tomorrow.

Sounds like they're giving him more leeway than was originally expected.

He's by far the best candidate, but would req paycut. Hopefully why the press is downtalkng it. But could be he just doesn't fit due tp age.

    • Tanking in the NFL isn’t really a thing and anybody wanting to bring the rigged lottery to the NFL has an ulterior motive.
    • I understand where you're coming from, but we need another safety IMHO. Other positions, especially on defense, dont have ideal depth, but to me at least S is the one position we can't stand pat at even when thinking about the future
    • 100%. Nick Scott was awful last year. Like, even for a franchise that hasn't historically invested in that position, it stood out for how awful it was. If he sees meaningful snaps at S again we're cooked.  Maybe he has value for ST, but I certainly hope we can upgrade. Jordan Fuller, who was by all accounts an Evero guy, was almost as bad. Xavier Woods was bad, but not complete garbage. Still did not want him back. Those 3 guys seriously may have been the worst S group in the NFL. And they all were brought in, especially Fuller, as good fits for this system. Everyone knocks the defensive line, and they deserve a lot of blame, too, but so, so many times our safeties inability to tackle let 4-5 yard runs turn into 10+. And it happened over and over and over again if you watch the film. Honestly, Demani Richardson was the only S by the end of the year I remember making positive plays. I have no issue with Richardson being in the mix and/or competing to be a starter, but we still need another S desperately IMHO who has actually played meaningful snaps in the NFL. The only caveat/excuse for our secondary was the fact our pass rush was nonexistent for large stretches last year. Maybe that helps with coverage, but I dont see how that makes any of these guys better at tackling.  I know it somewhat feels like piling on at this point, but I feel 100% confident in saying this was the worst tackling team in franchise history. The 70ish yard pass play we gave up to Jamarr Chase where he ran through and past everyone in the secondary has to be up there in terms of most embarrassing plays I've ever seen. I can't imagine how embarrassed Kuechly must have been watching from the booth... I think bringing back Evero was a mistake, but for a team that has had nothing but change over the past 5 years, I'm willing to see this through. I definitely think we added significantly to the floor of this defense with the additions we made. I dont think Evero has any further excuses if he cant field a unit that can at least somewhat hold their own. Fixing the safety play is going to be a big part of that.
