stuff he said aboot jimmy:

He stands tall in the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield and relishes working with downfield receivers like Tate and Floyd. He will be very comfortable stretching the field in the NFL and has played in a pro style offense during his college career. His mechanics are refined to the point of being able to step right into an NFL offense and he will have no problem digesting the playbook. He is widely regarded as the most NFL ready QB in college.

I put him at the top of list and think he will be the first QB chosen. He will wow people come workout time, especially if he’s throwing to Tate on home turf for NFL types. He’s so much closer to stepping onto an NFL field and being successful than Locker or Bradford and that should get him taken before either. In no way am I comparing him to Payton Manning (I see more Carson Palmer than Manning), he just has that same sense of ho-hum about him that Manning has, like he’s boring almost. There both just so calm, cool and precise about their business. It’s like they’re lulling you too sleep while they slit your throat.

moreon newton after last night

Newton rushed for 82 yards on 22 carries against the Ducks, and he threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. On the plus side, Newton showed above-average arm strength and flashed adequate touch on some downfield passes, and there's obviously a lot to like about his mobility and power in the pocket. He showed good burst on an 18-yard scramble that converted a third-and-12 in the fourth quarter and he shook what could have been a sack to complete his second touchdown pass.

The negatives outweigh the positives for Newton, however. His accuracy was inconsistent at best and he made a poor decision on his interception, and carrying the ball away from his frame and losing a fumble with less than five minutes remaining in a championship game and an eight-point lead is inexcusable. Oregon tied the score following the fumble, but Newton completed just one pass and rushed for one yard on two carries on the ensuing game-winning drive.

Making matters worse, Newton could be seen grimacing late in the fourth quarter and received X-rays on his back following the game. His aggressive running style makes his durability a concern at the NFL level, where he'll take more and bigger hits. It only takes one team to fall in love with him for Newton to come off the board in the first round, but he's a risky pick there should he declare for the draft because he has so much developing to do in order to transition to a pro-style offense.

Anybody know what the professionals said about Tom Brady? I'm pretty sure that not one of them even had him as high as a 4th rounder. Even the great Bill Bellichick had no clue how good he was or he would have been too worried about somebody else getting him to wait til the 6th round.

For the few who want to argue for drafting Newton:

He is a project--not debatable. He has character issues--not debatable. He has not run a pro set offense--not debatable.

Why would you risk the first pick in the draft on him? Have the dozens of QB busts in the past meant nothing to you? Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Jamarcus Russell, Joey Harrington, Alex Smith, Matt Leinhart, Vince young, Kyle Boller, David Carr, Patrick Ramsey, Rex Grossman, Cade Mcown, Heath Shuler......

Were you paying any attention at all?

The majority of those busts were considered to be finished products who were fundamentally sound, in case you didn't know.

Having said that, Cam may not be #1 overall worthy, but he's much much better than some here are making him out to be. Sam Bradford had many of the same concerns that scouts have with Newton. It's just a product of that spread, zone read, offense.

it's funny, I've rarely seen experts in agreement about someone. Last year Clausen was taking heat from people like Todd McShay who thought he was just lacking in the mechanics and intangibles market and he wasn't sold on his skill set. Then you had people saying he should go #1 overall, or #4 like Kiper.

This year though, most of them are staying the hell away from Newton, though they often caveat that with "Some NFL team will reach."

Someone will. It'll be up to Cam Newton to show if he can play in the NFL. He may have the body, but does he have the mind, the dedication, and the toughness? Time will tell.

That is not true, at least for Scouts Inc and MANY other analysts. one of the largest knocks on Bradford was durability. the other was not pro offense. there was never a question about his character. never a question about his intangibles. never a question about his accuracy. he had shown the ability to read defenses. I don't recall if anyone had major issues with his footwork.

He had question marks, sure, but they were quite different.

I'm pretty sure he has the toughness...he showed that last night by playing through pain for most of the game. He also proved he has the ability to learn, you can see that by looking at how his passing numbers improved from the first half of this season to the 2nd half.

Like I said though, there will always be concerns with any QB who's coming from a spread offense, because none of them are being taught the NFL way.

Clausen wasn't taking heat from anyone until he talked with John Gruden and then McShay and Kiper just tried to get some attention for themselves by saying exactly what Gruden said.

However, Gruden did seem to like The Golden Calf of Bristol.
