Cam Newton wants to be Big Ben

If we go that route, we may as well change the team symbol as well, to this:

Regardless of whether we like it or not, Clausen is going to get the chance to prove if he can be the guy this year. As far as getting someone over Pike, I can't buy into using two picks in two drafts on what likely amounts to the third quarterback.

We've got enough youth. Get a couple of veterans in camp - maybe Moore is one of them, maybe even McCown - and take the best three of that bunch into the season.

If it doesn't work out for Clausen - and I suspect it won't - go after your franchise QB next year when there's likely to be more than just one option.

If we stick with Clausen that Lions logo might apply. Clausen is going to get his chance this year but I am not talking about a third quarterback, I am talking about the eventual franchise quarterback. I think that Newton, Locker or Gabbert would all be upgrades to Clausen. Clausen would be listed behind the free agent veteran we pick up as number 2 in 2011 and when he proves not to be the one, will be the eventual third QB. By picking a guy this year we don't put off the decision until next year and at least have a guy who could be the starter in 2012. Otherwise we are drafting and developing a guy after the 2011 season while we lose consistently in 2012 letting him gain experience. I doubt Pike will ever be an NFL QB so why keep him around. For that matter Keith Null is a 6th rounder, at least he has playing experience.

I can see a lot of folks here are putting way more stock into John Fox's handling/evaluation of QBs than I do.

Regardless, as I said before, the team is going to give Clausen a chance to prove he can be something whether we like it or not. And given how weak the pickings are, even Pike and Moore may get that chance (though Moore is the one I'm least sure of).

We do have other needs, which means we can't afford to apply the Jon Gruden method to getting a quarterback.

so you're a good GM.. no matter what the case, who do you pick up? you have 2 avenues... who is the guaranteed pick?

You have to trade down, I mean the only real player that you could defend as a number one overall is Bowers but we don't need a DE that bad. You can argue that Green, Peterson, or Fairley are good enough to be taken # 1 overall but I don't feel comfortable waiting until the 3rd round for a QB that is not as athletic that as some of the ones in the 1st round.

There is no question that we have other needs but none that make the same difference as a quarterback. You say you doubt that Clausen is the one but want to put things off. Why? Do you think we have any chance of getting luck next year?? If not then there are guys in this draft who could be franchise guys. I am tired of watching everyone take a shot and getting their franchise guy while we continue with mediocrity. I think that people get hung up on the number 1 pick whereas if we were picking 13 for example getting a quarterback would be in the realm of possibility. With a salary cap for rookies a top 5 pick won't be so expensive so if we would pick a guy with the 15th pick, he should be worth the number 1 pick since that is the last chance we can pick him until the third round. Assuming we don't trade down.

Speaking of Jon Gruden, anyone remember this from last year?
