Meh, it's not meaningless if someone who would otherwise be laid off doesn't have to be because of it... It's still more than what many corporations do in America today so whatever.

Not like it changes much, but it's something.

edit: Also, what's meaningless is Smith's comment on twitter...

I agree it's not meaningless, but stories like this does seem to solidify that the rumors that this guy is just out to make a name for himself.

I know it's a good thing and all, but come on, some of us were not born yesterday. This type of charity isn't given without ulterior motives. Next step for him: Washington and voting ballots.

A lot of CEO's did that after the whole TARP fiasco so it is nothing new. The Pro-Bowl idea is probably the best move the players could make as far as I have heard but they are nowhere near united enough to pull that off. I'm sure not all of the players would agree and we may end up seeing Jimmy Clausen starting in the Pro-Bowl.

Well he's my beef with that; which would save more money and ultimately more jobs?

Scenario A.) RG makes $10,000,000 per year from year 1 to year 5, but only $1 in year 6.

Scenario B.) RG make $500,000 (A sum that any of us would be more than happy to have, and probably double that the most successssful among us will ever make in a year.) from year 1 to year 6.

Yeah, it's super nice that he is reducing his salary to save jobs, but take this action with a grain of salt. He's still got more money than any of us could spend in a lifetime. He's not hurting.

p.s. believe me, I'm no socialist or class warrior. All I'm saying is if you had the cajones to demand an 8-figure salary, at least nut up and stand by it rather than try to pass yourself off as some kind of philanthropist.

look im on the players side with this but there rep is one big fuking moron.

More truth.

Truth be told, I'm on the fan's side. I don't give a real flying fug what the players make or what the owners bank. And I don't think we have all the info to second-guess the hard numbers. All we can say for certain is that Smith isn't being cooperative.

I just want a 2011 NFL season.

Umm... I don't think he's trying to appear as a philanthropist. If anything I think he wants to appear ethical. If the players won't make money, he's saying he won't either. I guess on that level, he's on target.

But other than that, I agree it's is a meaningless PR move.

By cutting his salary, he is acknowledging that his enormously inflated salary (which was actually higher before 2009, he reduced it to $11 mil) is a factor in the labor dispute. If he was sincere he would have reduced his salary to a less Caesar-like level long before this.

It's been said; meaningless PR move.

So it's meaningless when he cuts his salary by $9,999,999.00 but it's meaningful if he cuts it by $1,000,000.00?

Being a PR move doesn't make it meaningless. He either does the right thing or he doesn't. Trashing him now is senseless, he's the commissioner of the most popular sport in the U.S.A. he's going to make some coin.
