Healthcare beyond employment should be a 2 way street holding both parties somewhat accountable.

Open a group plan:

employee is covered for free while employed

Family gets coverage by paying premiums thru employee's withholding.

Once you are no longer employed by that employer, you can purchase insurance in the group plan at predetermined rate.

Isn't this basically what all employer provided healthcare plans involve?

I know they are more at risk than most people, but not many employers - other than US Military - provide any medical coverage beyond employment. The players should shoulder some of the financial burden for medical coverage beyond employment - they make big $$$$$.

employer healthcare plans are run by insurance companies who determine rates at certain deductibles, etc..

all of those prices are determined by the risk pool of everyone involved.. a company of 10 people could cost 30,000-70,000 depending on the health of everyone..

insurance companies usually state that they are not responsible for any injury occurred on the job... you're individual/family BCBS plan certainly does. but this is usually due to worker comp picking it up.

regardless, if you work at a dangerous job, the premiums sky rocket and chances are greater you are not covered..

you also have the huge issue that involves pre-existing conditions.. all of which will be the case from football-related injuries..

the NFL will most likely have to go the route of self-insurance and using an insurance company as a 3rd party.. this should help them control the premiums..

but you have 1500 players every year and every 10 years you'll have an extraordinary turn over rate of players who will be drawing off that money pool.. (this is an extremely conservative number.. but may be balanced out by the 3 year average for NFL players).. still imagine what that number means in 20 years..

you can figure most players won't use any more than 2 million in a life time, but 5 million would be a more appropriate number..

really, players who save their money and/or invest their money right who play for 8 years should be able to self-insure themselves.. but who wants to spend their own money for medical bills when you can get someone else to pay for it?

I think there is a solution in there somewhere, but you are talking about a slippery slope.. everyone is fuging entitled now a days..

it used to be employee benefits were just that.. benefits.. now they are entitlements..

and you can thank the group plan community for the downward spiral of the health care system..

Want happen. Only the NHL made it that far and it was because no one cared. The owners came out on top in that one BTW.

I think if nothing gets done the NFL will take there last offer and make the players strike. Most want....
