Best/Worst Case Scenario Taking a QB #1 Overall

With Jimmy taken in the second round last year, and sucking something fierce... blah blah blah, we need a new one, broken record rant etc. etc.

You've heard it all before, but I ask a question:

What is the best and worst case scenario we have by the end of next year if we take a QB #1 overall this year?

Best Case:

Something along the lines of what is going on with the Eagles, where either QB turns out special and we can trade one of them for a pick that isn't worth the player (in a good way for us)

Worst case:

The browns situation with Derek anderson and Brady Quinn... yikes...

In-between case:

What happened with the chargers with Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. We let one of them go and get nothing for him, but go on to have success with the one we keep, and he turns out to be top 5 in the league. the other one goes to a city that's underwater and wins a superbowl.

I personally think that The whole Brady Quinn thing is more likely, what with our own golden Domer under center. Your thoughts?

Best case the guy comes in plays like gangbusters and gets us to 8-8. Viola we have a franchise QB named Cam, or Gabbert.

Worst case we pass on a shut down corner, offensive ROY, or solid DT. PLUS add an expensive project QB who we really don't need to start his rookie year.

This sort of risk/reward analysis should be part of any decision making process. The problem is that on top of this cold read, we need specific reads on the situation. How likely is it that Gabbert, Newton or Mallet etc. will succeed in the NFL? Risk/reward analysis means nothing unless it's put in a context. I really haven't seen anything to say that any of the QB's have the tools to be successful. The QB's that have been successful in the past few years have the following properties coming out of college: Good arm strength (not Jamarcus Russell good, but adequate to make all the NFL throws), good accuracy, smart, a good leader, tough both physically and mentally and has a good work ethic. Every prospect that we have this year seems to have one or more of these problems. If I had to make a call, I would say that most if not all of them will become Brady Quinn look-alikes. Maybe one of them will turn into a mediocre QB that will stay in the league for a while but never achieve anything big.

Yeah well, Jimmy Clausen was supposed to be ready to start "right now", but look at how that turned out. There is no doubt in my mind that Cam Newton could go in with 1/3rd of the playbook and still make more plays than him just from shear athletic ability.

Doubling up on QBs will increase our chances of one of them panning out. Gabbert could end up being a future star.. and Clausen is what he is.

Yeah, but if the one that pans out is Clausen and not Gabbert, we've wasted a very high pick, for nothing.

Cam Newton would've have gotten knocked the hell out if he started for the Panthers last season.

Your funny. SO using process of elimination the only choices for the first are

TE, FB, K, S, RB, C, OT, OG, LB, or DT. But we can also eliminate everyone not named Fairley in your mind right. LOL. Way to think outisde the box. Mark my words in 3-4 years a DT taken after Fairley will surpass him in sacks and Pro Bowl nods.

The ship sailed on taking a QB #1 overall the moment Andrew Luck announced he was returning to Stanford. Accept it.

I agree they probably aren't going to pick a QB, but at the same time, i do not think it still isnt' a possibility. Look at previous drafts... a QB always goes #1 when in need...

      With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.

      Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.

      Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
